I went hunting for the first time this year...I know accidents happen...but for people to show such disregard for the basics rules of firearm use is simply...alarming!

"wound to the upper part of his leg after one of his hunting partners mistook him for a deer"

Thighs and deer look a lot alike when the mind is disengaged.

Please try and leave out the young boys names they have enough to deal with without keep hearing about it so much. It was a horrible accident and these young boys need to go on with their lives so please stop mentioning there names every time. Thank you

I have deer hunted since I was 13 or 14, and I have never mistook a person for a deer, only people that should not have any type of a firearm in thier hands would do such a thing, that is like many hunters being shot while in a tree stand, I have never seen a deer in a tree.7472

I'm from Nelson and we are staying in the paper alot lately. I can say not all people from Nelson shoot before they realize it isn't a deer. I agree with concered citzen. Leave the Craig family alone. They have had their share of being in the papers. Be Blessed and Please be safe in the woods.

Can't wait for NBC29 to write something positive about Nelson County. From now on I'm getting my news from CBS19. Let the Craig family grieve and move on. Really is it earth shattering news that someone had a hunting accident? There are worse accidents and crimes happening away from Nelson - look into those for a change.

when does the stupidity stop? People need to be required to have lessons to shoot a gun, or even hunt.

And they should have to pass a test to be able to shoot. I mean for goodness sakes this is ridiculas!

I agree with Bushcat, it is preposterous to claim that a human can be mistaken for a deer, if you are talking about appearance. Many things in the woods make sounds that can be mistaken for a deer, if you are expecting a deer. The problem is there are hunters who will take "sound shots", that is they shoot at something that they hear moving in the woods. Shooting at anything that you can not identify by sight should be a criminal offense, if it isn't already. There are entirely too many hunting accidents excused with the statement, "he looked like a deer".

Um. My guess is that CBS19 will report on this as well.

In a sense, you are correct that hunting accidents are not earth shattering news. And that is precisely the problem. They happen WAY too often! Yet too many people are willing to throw up their hands and act as if such accidents "are just a part of hunting."
