SILVER SPRING, Md.(WUSA)- It's a been a week since a Maryland woman was robbed by a wannabe cop. The police impersonator stole her belongings, but it's when and where this all happened that still has the woman shocked.
She spoke about her experience on Tuesday night.
On this street is where the cop impersonator turned crook victimized the woman. Montgomery County Police say the act was bold and daring, and now the victim is trying to make sense of the fact that this happened right in front of her church.
She told 9News Now's Ken Molestina in Spanish, "I'm scared." The El Salvador native didn't want to be identified for fear of being victimized again.
She said, "I was on my way to church." She says it was just before noon last Thursday when she was on her way to church. The man in the composite sketch, she says, was chasing her in the car behind her. He continued to pursue her up the street near the church, St. Camillius.
He was honking his horn, and motioning her to pull over. At some point, police say, he even flashed what appeared to be a police badge. The woman eventually did stop her car. The driver had fooled her into thinking he was a cop.
She says once he managed to get her to stop, he pulled her out of the car and made her take a seat on the curb. It was at this point she realized the man wasn't legitimate, and instead was out to rob her.
She said, "Yeah, he took my things, my purse."
He took her belongings, she says, her cell phone, purse, credit cards, everyting of value she had on her was robbed. Thankfully she wasn't hurt.
"I was frightened and I panicked," she said. She's still shaken up, she says, and wants the man caught...fast.
Police are asking if you recognize the man from the composite sketch and can provide any information that leads to his capture you are asked to call authorities.
Police also say anyone who fears they are being tricked by a police impersonator should call 9-11 immediately, and give your location so that another officer can be sent out.
They also advise never to pull over in a dark area.
Instead stop at the nearest gas station or well-lit parking lot.
