As a resident of Mitchell County...their report about Governor Easley's DISASTER DECLARATION for Spruce Pine really irked me. Larry Blunt reported that "50 businesses" were destroyed in two shopping areas." Locals call them 'Upper & Lower' Streets.....and there are @ 50 businesses on the two streets. l0 businesses were directly effected by the fires 7 weeks ago...and 8 of the 10 have re-opened.

News 13 and, to some extent, The Asheville Citizen-Times, have left the impression that SPNC's downtown is IN RUINS....which would be news to Blue Ridge Properties, Blue Moon Books, The Mitchell News-Journal, Dellinger's Hallmark, Wildflowers Herbal Remedies, The Toe River Arts Council (TRAC) Gallery, Peoples Furniture, Wachovia, The Carolina Theater........ etc. etc. etc.

(Absolutely ABYSMAL news coverage....which directly effects the livelihoods of dozens of LOCAL businesses!)

AND........(originally posted Thursday Morning... 9/27/07)

Now.......about WLOS & their ABYSMAL COVERAGE of Spruce Pine....this morning's LOCAL news was a repeat of last night's...."50 BUSINESSES" is an outright LIE. You can help fight MEDIA INCOMPETENCE...AND MANY LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS...by shopping in DOWNTOWN SPNC.....and supporting the 80% of Spruce Pine that was not directly effected by the fires of 7 weeks ago.....and the 98% which is very much OPEN FOR BUSINESS.

<sigh> ....Thank you.
