The Lotus Garden in Bluefield was closed this week after a visit by the Mercer County Department of Health.

Lotus Garden is just as clean or cleaner than the next place to eat. One thing to think about is at least people working there didn't just shoot up or crush a pill in the bathroom, then go back to serving or preparing food like other places. I will take unmarked deer meat in a freezer any day over Hepatitis C, AIDS, etc.

Most likely closed for good, if Mall Management has its way. I am very confused as to how Macados remains open... in my opinion, you are a very brave little pilgrim to eat there also. I once worked fast-food where the Health Insp. came by once a month, to collect his cut... cash talks and bullshit walks..... no matter where you live or eat-out.... Ciao

I've been through the kitchen at Macado's a few times. No way I would eat there.

I as well do not like some of the characters that are sometimes in food prep.I can agree with the post about the "shooting up" and pill crushing. In many cases to eat out is risky at best.
Too often foods are not properly handled or stored the area is not clean etc.The help is nasty or careless.....and this happens sometimes in even seemingly nice eateries.
I went in a place long ago(since closed down) and there was always a crowd as they had a "buffet"- I got a tray and napkin and reached for flatware....it was ALL greasy! the plates&salad bowls were greasy....I did not continue through the line at all and complained to the management-they were running the dishwasher with NO HOT WATER- that was gross! The gas water heater went bad and instead of either closing OR going to disposable plates and flatware until a new one was put in....they used icy cold water....That had gone on for a week or so AND there were several reports of people getting really sick after eating there. When we eat out we HOPE all is at least decently clean but all to often if we saw or knew what the kitchen was like and how things were handled we might be shocked.
IF the hot water fails the place really should close until it is back up and running right. This is something the health dept should have handled.

they had 37 violations not 57
BLUEFIELD (WVVA)- Multiple health violations have shut down a local restaurant.
Initial complaints of live animals and cockroaches prompted the Mercer County Health Department to step in. And while they didn't find any evidence supporting the complaints against the Lotus Garden at the Mercer Mall, they did find more than three dozen critical violations.
The sign on the door of the Lotus Garden says, "Closed due to water problems," but that's not entirely true according to the Mercer County Health Department. The health inspector found 37 critical violations and more than a dozen non-critical violations.
"Any time you have three or more critical, you have the right to take the permit away," says Health Inspector Carl Carter.
Carter says he did not find any evidence of animal slaughter but the critical violations consisted of improper food temperature and storage, soiled soda machine nozzles, reusing single service bags, improper storing of pesticides and cleaners and dozens of other violations. One of the more unusual violations was the finding of unmarked deer meat.
"Any product that is brought into the establishment must be stamped. We have to assume it is unproved meat because we don't know how it was slaughtered," Carter said.
Inspector Carter also found two chicken feathers and chicken feet.
"Actually in a bucket I found some chicken feet. They claim it was brought in for their Chinese New Year. They showed some documentation on it and it was just for them to use themselves."
The restaurant could reopen -- but only after these critical violations are corrected.
"If its uncorrected, its going to be a little more serious and that's why I took the permit,." Carter said.
The owner of Lotus Garden, Haiping Liu, says the restaurant's staff has been working hard to correct the violations.
Liu explained some of the violations to WVVA. She says the deer meat was a gift from a customer and not served at the restaurant. She also says the chicken feet were for employees only as part of a Chinese New Year custom.
Liu says the restaurant is ready to reopen, pending the health inspector's approval.
