Meigs embracing the Power of Prayer

Nothing more than a bunch of cult-following sheeple! People need to stop praying to an imaginary deity and take action to better this community.

Mathew 6-5-6 Whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray while standing in synagogues and on street corners so that people can see them. Truly I say to, they have their reward but whenever you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

That's not exactly what that verse means. It doesn't mean only to pray alone in a room. It actually means don't be a hypocrite, and exude a false witness for one's own personal gain. It simply means that one must be humble in prayer. This verse gives a little more insight into what Jesus was talking about.
11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus:'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.
12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.'
13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying,'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!'
The National Day of Prayer events in Pomeroy are not put on by a group of people looking for personal gain or recognition. I'm sure you don't believe that anyone could actually be moved by the spirit to pray for their country and it's leaders, but I can assure you that these folks have pure intentions.
Out of pure curiosity, why does it bother you that people pray in public anyways?

Is quoting that scripture meant to demean the National Day of Prayer?
I'm not sure of the intent, but to isolate that scripture as an indication that public prayer is wrong, is to misunderstand Jesus' teachings. In order to adequately explain what is being discussed in those verses, read some before and after. Reading and comprehending any one of the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and/or John) in it's entirety would prove beneficial in showing that it is not all public prayer that is being condemned by Jesus. Nor is he trying to convey that any person who prays aloud is a hypocrite. It is about the heart. Jesus knew the people about whom he was speaking were praying to bring attention to themselves. They sought and received an audience of people and not communication with God.

That verse is meant for those who ONLY pray in public for show. There are some that pretend to be christian and pray in public, but go home and live a completely different life. Hence, Saturday sinner, Sunday the saint.
