North Carolina County Approves Domestic Partner Benefits After Heated Vote

Dec 16, 2009 | Posted by: Sei | Full story: lezgetreal.com

Yesterday, by a vote of 6-3, Mecklenburg County North Carolina Commissioners approved a measure to will provide domestic partner benefits for same-sex couples. According to a report on North Carolinas Q-Notes… The approved plan will define “domestic partners” as two same-sex people in a “spousal like” and “exclusive, mutually committed” relationship in which both “share the necessities of life and are financially interdependent.” The county will require domestic partners meet certain criteria and provide signed legal affidavits along with joint financial documents such as a joint mortgage or lease. Employees will be able to enroll in a domestic partner plan sometime next fall, when the county government enters into a new health insurance enrollment period. Mecklenburg County’s plan will not include opposite-sex, unmarried couples. via Q-Notes

nope it is not good enough, Travis. But I'll take it considering this is coming out of North Carolina - unheard of! NC is Jesse Helms country, the most vile, hate-filled, homophobic man ever to sit in the US Senate.

Our day will come - keep the faith!

Respect and compassion are welcome whereever they show up, but in NC, this is a real blessing.

Speaking of ignorance, you really hit the jackpot this time. Mecklenburg County is the home of Charlotte, the largest city in NC. Not very back woodsy like, say, Polk County FL, is it?

That is discrimination to the unmarried hetero couples, and it is just a matter of time until a straight couple will sue to have this overturned.

Oh, I'm only calling you out. I'm not intolerant or hateful. But you have the balls to actually condemn the guys that threw a murderer in jail. Clearly, you're the example of a loving Christian.

If a straight couple wants benefits, they pay 35 bucks to get a marriage license. That's not discrimination. That's their choice.

Your argument is really ridiculous, by the way.

No it is not ridiculous, perhaps there re reasons why the straight couple can't get married, maybe the EX is dragging out the divorce. There could be other reasons why someone might not want to get married. This is discriminatory to the straight people living together, all couples requesting to be recognized as domestic partners should be granted that no matter what their sexual orientation is.

In fact 2 family members living together should qualify as domestic partners.

Didn't you read the fine print of Terms of Service, that if you put anything about Jesus or a picture of an innocent baby on your profile, you can spew out as much hate and bigotry as you like? It's the "Jebus clause"!

I agree with you......to a point. IF the straight couple makes the same committment, then I see no problem. However, they must meet the same qualifications showing that committment. They must own or have a mortgage on property, or have other committed responsiblitities that show their intent to live as committed partners. Just "living together" is not a committment.

I hope some of the Saturday Night Live writers catch this story. It could be one really great SNL comedy bit.

No. Awww, the poor straight couple has to overcome a few obstacles, but they can still obtain a marriage license and then receive over 1000 benefits not only from the local government but also state and federal governments that are denied to any gay couple. If you want to talk about discrimination, look there.

You're complaining about a crumb being given to a gay couple when you have the entire cake available to yourself. Grow up.
