Sheriff's election a whirlwind to the end

“I wouldn't do it right away, because the circumstances have changed”
Nick Mackey, a little-known Charlotte attorney who overcame his anonymity and questions about his background, was chosen Thursday to be Mecklenburg County's next sheriff.
The local Democratic Party Executive Committee picked Mackey, 40, over acting Sheriff Chipp Bailey in an election as chaotic and surprising as the race. Mackey earned 631 votes to Bailey's 390 in a complicated party vote Thursday.
He becomes the first black Mecklenburg County sheriff at least since the 19th century.
'It's a very historic night,' Mackey said. 'We have to move forward and bring the party together.' Read more
