Does the newspaper mean "jibe"?
A jab is a poke or an injection.
Journalists use the language as a tool of their trade; but they are constantly ruining it in all English-speaking countries, including England.
Soon we'll have trouble understanding each other even in the same county, let alone country.

At least on this side of the Atlantic, "jab" means a verbal assault in this context. "Jibe" is a joke, usually a reference to some embarrassing characteristic or event in the object's life.

We've been degrading the English language for hundreds of years, and your indignation is no more likely to stop us now than it was before.

What? You are correct regarding "jab" but "jibe", no, not really.

With this I agree. Well, sort of; English is a living language (as opposed to Koine Greek) and, as such, it evolves. I accept the evolution of the language. However, I shall never accept that "your" means "you're" or that "their" means "they're" or that "of" is a verb. i.e. I should of known. ugh!

Now, back to the real topic; The commissioner in question is just trying to raise his shields. He knows he's a bigot and that he's put his ignorant prejudice on public display. Time to duck and cover.
