I want to say something about LICKING.Our kids need something to do in this town.I have been on here and watched my family and friends get trashed, and It is enough with the bashing. let us look at our children the girls are having babies, some still in junior high.My grandson chews.I would love to see a skating rink a game room that kids can go to and just have a good time.I would help monitor it and Im sure other parents would be willing to help. I cannot afford to do this or I would, but someone must want to invest in our children, our future. The pool is a wonderful thing and Im sure others are excited. I for one am grateful for the new pool, thank you city of licking.why cant we have a place with a couple of pool tables some video games, and an area just to have coffee and read. How about wirless internet. I know it sounds like a bit much, but is it? It could also bring a couple of jobs, and with the economy I see this as a win win situation.I think it would be a good place for kids to socialize. We have plenty of churches with room for something like this.I think God would want our kids to be in a safe place. It could work If you have an idea e-mail me at rodeored@cablemo.net

Skating rinks are no substitute for parenting.
Game rooms are no substitute for parenting.
Church youth groups are no substitute for parenting.
Swimming pools are no substitute for parenting.
The internet is no substitute for parenting.

No one said parenting successfully is easy and don't expect any amount of external activities to actually bear the burden of instilling morals, values and character in your children.

If you want your children to turn out well, make them a priority in your life in terms of the time that YOU actually spend with them. Of course it would be best if YOU were actually a positive role model to begin with...

Contrary to what hillary might have you believe, it does not take a village to raise a child, it takes a Mother AND a Father that are willing to sacrifice their time, effort and concern.

Hillary's village is full of dope peddlers, pedophiles and lowlife scum.

The school is no substitute for parenting either.

Churches have "youth rooms" here in Licking. One
church tried to have theirs open on Friday nights
a while back & didn't have much response. I agree
that kids are most influenced by their parents &
families. If parents/families spent time together,
attended church together etc. it would help.

I do not think anyone is suggesting that skating rinks, game rooms, youth groups or swimming pools area SUBSTITUTES for good parenting - they certainly are not! However, I think what they can be is additional well structured activities with good role models to help parents in their efforts to raise great, responsible children that will contribute to the good of the community in the future. Having raised two college graduates, who are employed FT in successful careers, and are non-smoking, non-drinking/drugging adults, I am grateful for ALL the help I received in my community - the Boy Scouts programs, Church Youth Groups, school functions, etc! With YOUR help, Dad and I raised great kids! THANKS.

having watched the pledge to our flag done away with i have seen prayer in school go by and i have seen children locked into a world of footstamps adults sitting on their asses waiting for the next hand out and generations of children raised without basic values of doing their best and doing the right thing. i would like to disagree it does take a group of people with values to raise children schools should treat all children with fairness not according to their last names. church should get out of the building funds and get into the community building bringing programs and values to all children every time i see a large new church i think what wonderful things they could have done with the money to help the community and of course parents having seen parents treating their children like more of a animal than a child i believe to get the paycheck from workers they should be forced into parenting classes and the home should be inspected to ensure it is decent for the young ones to get a check drug testing must and should be required fail twice and you are done

I work in a rehab and studies have repeatedly shown that crack addicts are easier to rehabilitate than meth addicts. Why do people do meth? At least crack is safer. But even crack causes permanent lung damage.

I have to agree Sharon, our kids need something in this town to keep them preoccupied and maybe out of trouble. I also agree that there is no substitute for real parenting. But if there was something for our kids to do MAYBE some of us adults could make a difference in a childs life. Some don't know what it's like to know real love. I say we need a something and let the youth be part of it. Let them decorate and run it with an adults suppervision and maybe they would appreciate it. I would love to see a skating rink/skate park come into Licking. The kids use to be able to skate down the side walks but the fabulous city decided that they can no longer do that. I don't see a problem with it as long as they aren't running over people and taring things up. We are having a lot of vandalism going on right now and I believe it's because our kids have nuthing to do.
I have the topix site but was very glad when my husband found this post. There is no one bashing each other we are all just discussing a better way for our kids.

I'm a student at Licking. I don't do drugs, don't drink, and get good grades. So, coming from the mind of one of the kids you're speaking of, I agree that we should have more things to do. A lot of the time, my friends tend to go downhill because of the fact that the only thing to do in this wonderful town is drink and party. It doesn't matter who their parents are or what they taught them, THE KIDS ARE NOT THEIR PARENTS. Don't think that your kid does whatever you say, because in Licking (and in any other town, I'm sure) you are ignored if you don't "hang out" with certain people or do certain things. In Licking, drinking and partying leads to popularity. We (the students) spend most of our time in school, so wouldn't you think that we were influenced my friends more so than the people we see a little in the evenings? There needs to be more things to do. A skating rink, a place to study and go to after school with your friends, something. Oh, and we need better cops. Just thought I'd throw that in there.
