Out with new, in with old

The sun is setting on open government in Luna County. First, it was a shame that the commission felt it had to get rid of John Sutherland. Full Story

Check out 2010 eaarmarks. Looks like Bingaman and Teague were trying for $399,340 for this project:

Luna County Community Rec Facility
Luna County Community Recreation Facility, NM, For the renovation of the old Pepsi building to house dedicated youth activities, practice space, and community meeting rooms.

Wonder what the final number was.

Hope there's no asbestos in this old building.... Those kind of environmental clean-ups get REAL expensive.

Does the county ever do any environmental research before buying/leasing property?

Lead Paint?
Asbestos?
Ground Water Contamination?
Soil Contamination?

What's going on with the old Pepsi building has been known and discussed for months at the commission meetings. And at $68,000, it would have been a bargain. Add about $330k to that number, including grants. One lady spoke about the place, I believe her name is Tootsie Stover. With the sewer lines filled with old sugar, it attracts bugs like crazy. And being a very old building, heating and cooling is expensive. For almost $400k, that building could likely get torn down.

5 commissioners won't resolve any problems. The population base doesn't support the need. I would point to 2 other things first: 1. Only minimal meeting details are ever reported in the Headlight and 2. the sometimes long delays in meeting minutes being posted on the county website.

In Ruidoso, when I lived there in the 80's used to film the City council and County commissioner meeting and replay them on their local access chanel 11. Deming has a local access channel 9 correct? Has anyone ever thought o filming it and getting say maybe Citizens for an open government to pay for the airtime, maybe get a few more sponsors. The cable company can offer a good reate and also donate a portion of it as their PSA requirement. Just a thought, I always watched it and found it quite interesting how a council or commision member would start to mouth off, see the cameras and quickly change their attitude.

Grants are only 'free' to those not paying. I know that the County government has never realized that the money they so easily spend for another TEMPORARILY funded program has to be paid for somehow.

Silver city also does this. Man, Ruidoso was doing this back in the 80's! I think we (Deming) are a little behind the times.
