Unbelievable... This is an old building.. Can anyone say ASBESTOS... the removal of which will not only be a major undertaking, the costs are outrageous!
This building will never meet CODE, and there is not enough land for the required parking.
But hey, Regan Vaughn used to go there as a kid so that makes it a Great Deal for the Taxpayers....

The screwing of the tax payer continues...

In the Luna County minutes on 8-14-2008 $40,000 was put aside for asbestos abatement. Odd thing The County bought this to tear down and use for parking for the ''sub-station'' along with the old diamond appliance building. J and J printing (City councilman- Milo)sold J and J printing to the County. The building (City Councilman-Shattuck) sold to the County was for $399,000 and now its for sale for $225,000 It looks real bad that the County buys the City coucils and County commissioners properties and turns around and sells them at a loss. Armijo, Holdridge AKA ''Mimbres Valley developement''. And how many more? The Irwin farm is another shady deal. Lets stop giving Golden eggs to the good old boys at the tax payers expense.

John Smith sold his building to the County. Milo sold another property north of town to the County.
Priceless.......

If possible, I think they should use the 3 theater rooms for Matinee's. Starmax is great but everyone is concerned at the fact that it houses a bar. Once the movies are watched at regular price at Starmax, this building could be used to show the movie again at a lower cost to the public. Deming NEEDS somthing for it's youth.

Thats great they want to provide for the kids and oh my, I get to use it when they are in school. What about when they are out of school for the summer and holiday vacations? Since my taxes are providing for this building why not a building for adults. I know there is a senior center but I am what you would call a "Tween". What buddies will get the job to over see this when they start hiring?

40K isn't enough for asbestos abatement in a building that size.

As long as we have crooks in leadership positions, No leadership by example, we will continue to see our tax dollars wasted and abused.

If you don't like the way things are, then stand up, speak out, and VOTE...

but when you vote try to vote for honor and integrity, not a certain political party...

We lost Fred Williams for a tub of OLEO.......

Think about it.....
FOP blunder

United States

#9 Jan 27, 2011
The local FOP was the owner of this building in the late 1980's and held meetings upstairs.

They sold it becasue it could not be brought up to code. The Fire Marshal was throwing fits about the upstairs being unstable and unfit for habitation as wel as being a major hazzard to those occupying spaces below.

There was nothing that could be done to bring it up to code absent tearing the building down and building a new one.

Now instead of the FOP blundering and selling it for 80 grand, now the county is heading down the same path?

Wow.

Everyday in Deming there is at least
a dozen things for teens to do but
they choose not to.
So forget about them.
As for tweens.
There are many things for you to do.
The photo club, the garden club, the
rock club etc.
But you choose not to do anything
but complain.
As for the old building
It seems joe public can't do anything
if he owned it because of no parking.
That's what the town said but when they
own something the rules change.
Why doesn't the Headlight stick up for
Joe Public and go after these so called
elected officials?

Why couldn't this place be called a community center rather than a youth center. That way all ages could use it. You could have all sorts of activities going on like: dances for teens on weekends, table tennis tournaments for adults and youth, beginning line dancing classes, yoga, karate, kickboxing, beginning crochet, belly dance, stretching and toning with stretch bands, weights or exercise equipment, theater, art classes, badminton, handball, beginning knitting, sewing classes, ballet, country western dancing, etc. A good events calendar would be key to keeping it occupied and organized.

I agree with the voting....everyone complains but no one votes! If everyone would vote things would change but everyone is lazy and uninformed in this town.

Are we always offered the option to vote on things like this, or does the commissioners vote by themselves ? Just like when they wanted to put in a new high school, that was on some ballot but got voted down, and think perhaps the citizens would like a say so on how our money sometimes is spent.

At one time I believe there was a Girls Club, perhaps it was a Youth Club, which was on Florida, not far from Blue Skies Primary, but for a long time it's been vacant. What happened there ? Not enough participants or what ? Think it's a good idea with "Concerned" to make it a community instead of just a youth center, giving all ages an opportunity to use it. I'm all for having things here for kids, but adults could use more here themselves, so make it a multi use center so everyone can enjoy it. after all, it's the adults that will wind up footing the bill with renovations I suspect.

Where is the parking????? There will be adult supervision I hope where will all these people park? What about the teenagers who drive. Where will they park? How will this affect Pine st. traffic? I see big problems whit this location as a rec center for our youth. Hope things turn out fine But I think there are problems with this project.

A Community center makes more sense. Please survey the youth to see if they will use this facility. Tons of good planned activities will need to be lined up. We've seen it in the past where the youth lose interest. The youth would more likely use it only on weekends so adults could use it during the day on week days.

1. We don't need it! Let's fully utilize the Starmax that the public already owns.
2. When are we going to stop spending? All I've heard since State of the Union and now here we go..spending on a boondogle.
3. How fully utilized is the depot?
4. Have any been conducted to see if a youth center will be safely utilized?
5. If we can't manage the Starmax, how will we handle the youth center?

I see the article mentioning getting $400K from the federal govt'. and that the county recently applied for a Community Development Block Grant to acquire more funding for this project. If that funding is approved would it mean that no, or very little, tax payers money will be used on this, or am I reading this all wrong ? Sounds like a better plan if all ages, not just kids, will be able to utilize this. We all could use a few more activities and things to do here.

Possibly another terrible idea. Without private investment this Youth center will become another waste of tax payer money. I have doubts about the county operating a center will thrive without wasting tons of money. Besides why does Deming need a YC, I thought Starmax was suppose to give kids something to do.

Isn't GRANT Money from the State or the FEDs TAX Payer money? It's my and your tax dollars weather its Local, State, or Federal dollars!!!!!
Wasting Tax Payer money on a condemened building with not enough land to meet the required parking requirements is criminal... If we are going to do something, could we at least follow the LAW???
