WASHINGTON - The board of directors for the D.C. Water & Sewer Authority, also known as WASA, has voted to offer domestic partnership benefits to its employees hired after 1987, when the federal government relinquished control over D.C. government employee personnel matters. A spokesperson said the new policy, which the board approved earlier this month, would cover 732 employees and provide the same benefits currently offered to spouses of married employees, including medical, dental and vision related health benefits; life insurance; and family leave related polices. “Across the country, the makeup of families is changing,” said WASA General Manager Jerry Johnson. “Human resources policies in governmental agencies and the corporate world alike are beginning to reflect these changes,” he said. “We at D.C. WASA recognized the trend in changing familial structures and sought to provide the same health and welfare benefits to unmarried partners of D.C. WASA employees that are offered to employee spouses.” According to a WASA statement, the agency provides drinking water and wastewater collection and treatment to more than 500,000 people in D.C. It also provides wastewater treatment for 1.6 million people in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland and Fairfax and Loudoun counties in Virginia.

Similar to other D.C. government agencies, employees hired before 1987 remain covered under an employee benefits package operated by the federal government, which doesnÂ’t offer domestic partnership benefits.
Wow! So can they quit and get rehired? Or do they lose their 22 years of seniority and pension if they do that?
