I'm glad that Loudon County has independents with the guts to try and change the system.

Just got a visit from an Independent (Lee Ledbetter) this afternoon. Glad to see she is taking advantage of the article and getting out to meet the people. I've also had the opportunity to have Sarah Dailey knock at my door, so it looks like those who have asked for my vote, are going to get it.

Just because a candidate says they're an independent, that doesn't necessary make it true.
Lee Ledbetter is a life long, generational democrat. She is after all the late Charlie Eblen's daughter. She's about as far left as Matt Brookshire. Unlike Brookshire, Ledbetter knew she couldn't get elected as a democrat in a county wide race so she decided to hide behind the independent mask.
Believe it or not, Lee didn't even vote in the May primary. Guess she just couldn't bring herself to vote republican and she didn't want to vote democrat since she was running as an independent so she just didn't vote at all. How's that for dedication to her party.
Then there's her inside connection. Her aunt, Betty Brown (life long democrat), is on the Loudon County Election Commission. Her aunt, Betty Brown also gave her $1000 for her campaign. This is just wrong. Election commissioners take an oath to be nonpartisan at all times. But here we have a member of the election commission out right and openly supporting a candidate no less a family member. I think it's admirable that Ms. Brown is supporting her niece but it has to be a violation of ethics for her to serve on the election commission and be supporting a candidate.
If Ms. Brown wants to support her candidate, she should step down or be removed from her position. This is just not right and smacks of dirty politics. If I were the other judge candidates I would demand that Ms. Brown step down.

The elections in Loudon are all fixed - There are fantom voters registered from homes that do not exist. This election won't make a difference, because the current commissioners will keep their seats. Out of all the folks running, only one commissioner lost their seat in the primary. The same people keep getting elected.

Chris Park won't return and voters in the 5th district will be electing a new commissioner and the do have a choice between Pat Hunter or Sharon Yarbrough.

Sharon Yarbrough's husband is board of ed's vice chairman Gary Ubben. For some reason, she doesn't want to claim him public. The old guy that likes to say that Loudon County is a weathy little county that needs to fork out more tax bucks.

Sarah Dailey is running in the first district against David Meers...the same district which replaced Nancy Marcus, so there is still hope that another person will be elected.

Loudon County voters owe independents like Sarah Dailey and Pat Hunter more than just their vote. By offering voters more than just the usual choices they have the opportunity to influence even if they are not elected.

Pat Hunter ran before as an Independent and I doubt seriously if she'll get a VIP invitation from the democrats or republican party machine.

Kinda interesting that you forgot to mention Lee Ledbetter who always voted democrat, ran as a democrat and was elected as 2nd district commissioner.

Word has it that Ledbetter attended party meetings seeking support from republicans and democrats but I haven't heard anything about Pat Hunter doing that. A friend said that she saw Ledbetter at the Village with the democrats.

On the other hand, commission is comprised of 8 liberal spenders (7 republicans and 1 democrat). Can't get any worse than that.

If you like Obama and Clinton, then you should like Ledbeter. All three will say anything or try to do anything to get elected. Ledbeter even has an Obama Facebook page. She's not fooling anyone by claiming she is suddenly "independent" only for purposes of the judge's election. She comes from a lifelong democrat family, she has always voted democrat, she ran for commissioner as a democrat and she refused to vote in the May primary. Now she wants republicans to vote for her simply because she "says" she is an "independent"?? She turns her back on her own democratic party because she thought it would give her a political advantage. I've heard that many democrats are voting against her just on qualifications and her actions alone. Her salary has been paid by us as taxpayers for the last 10 or more years, yet our District Attorney as her current boss lets her campaign while we pay her salary! That's just wrong. If that's her definition of honesty and public trust we're definitely better off without her. What do you get when you mix a crooked election commissioner aunt, a chief deputy sherrif, and a LC mayor father arrested in a dress in Knoxville for DUI? Sounds like someone claiming to be an "independent" to hide their real identity. But if you like Obama and Clinton style of politics, it just might be right up your alley.

If you read the article you would know that Lee Ledbetter gave specific reasons for her decision to campaign as an independent. She may well have campaigned and run as a Democrat for county commission but she makes it clear that she believes judges elections should be non partisan.

Put aside the party affiliation BS argument for any of the Independent candidates, I'd be more concerned how someone like Lee Ledbetter who works as top dog for the District Attorney General's office, how she could be fair or impartial when many of the cases that would come before her would be prosecuted by Russ Johnson, District Attorney General and her collegues in the DAG's office?

If you're looking for a non partisan candidate, I would think that it makes more sense to consider a candidate like Mary Longworth or even Rex Dale who have no direct affiliation, loyalties or ties to the District Attorney General's Office. Just my opinion.

Pat Hunter ran for commission once before as an independent. It was after that race that the Loudon County Democrats asked her to join. She was an officer until she found out the local party did not care about any local issues.
All the Loudon County Democrats want to do is help Democrats in statewide races. They try to get people to turn out to help Obama and Kerry get the electoral votes in this state. They help people like Harold Ford and Phil Bredesen in their races. They don't care about local matters.
Pat resigned from the party. They kept Pat Hunter's name on their webpage for a long time after she resigned. They refused to accept her resignation and kept her listed as an officer. How can you refuse to accept a resignation like that?

Don't forget the ole Republican saying, don't sling mud and don't talk about the issues, corruption, greed, lies, mismanagement, peddling tacky jewelry in a county office, nepotism...

A candidate without a local party behind them gives up the large donations from those local parties. They should have chosen a local party for the money alone.
