I am so pleased to find this forum to exchange ideas and thoughts with Mr Shaver, one of our illustrious school board members. I am alarmed by the most recent comments that Mr Shaver has made regarding the yearbook sponsor at Lenoir City High School pushing a gay agenda and Mr Shaver wanting to pursue an investigation of this supposed "agenda" that he is pushing. I could see this being a proper use of time if the Equality bills in several states were not such a current topic. But since the gay and lesbian equality in marriage is such a current topic, I would like to applaud this teacher for allowing his students to explore how a gay student feels.
I would ask Mr. Shaver to concentrate more on the drop out rate, the college entrance percentages, and if he wants to get real busy in something that matters to people around here, a winning football team. There are much more important things for him to apply his time and energy to than this. There is an attitude of failure and mediocrity that pervades the children of our town and I would suggest that it has more to do with children having little hope because their education leaves them incapable of handling college or most times even getting into college. That would be a much more worthy exploit, if you have some extra time, Mr. Shaver.
Gay kids are not going to perish because you wish them gone. The only thing that will perish is your very antiquated thinking. Please have some love in your heart for those you don't understand.

Funny how you could not mention God in any school setting, but you can say all you want about homosexuals. As many people are offended concerning gays as there are people offended at the mention of God. But guess who always wins out? The world is a funny place.

I agree with you that there are much more important things to worry about, including the quality of education. But it's not Shaver's fault the parents in LC are more concerned about football than education.

I wonder how much change could be fostered in our community by some innovative thinking. I get it. Change is scary, but acceptance of less than mediocre outcomes with a shrug is a nightmare.
And, in regards to the comment about not being able to speak about God...really? I have children that attend Loudon County Schools and the teachers and students openly speak about God. One of my son's teachers argued with a non-Christian child that Jesus was the Messiah. God is alive and well in Loudon County schools, but so is malaise.
