reminds me of an irresponsible fire chief that let his 13 YO kid drive a truck on a busy state highway and then brags about it to the press. last time I checked the driving age in NM was 16 and it should apply to golf carts also. some common sense by parents is some times lacking.

If you live in Alto Village, it is not terribly uncommon to see unsupervised children driving the streets in their grandparents' golf carts. For grandchildren, driving golf carts is their first choice of entertainment. The golf course has a policy that no one will drive a golf cart on golf course property unless they have a valid drivers license. Does the Alto CC management strictly enforce this policy, you'd have to ask them.

Now this child will have to live with the fact that he was driving the golf cart that killed his mother. Very sad all the way around.

"Someone" made a terribly sad & tragic decision to let a 5-yr old drive a golf cart, on dangerously steep terrain. There's been no information as to who the golf cart actually belongs to. An Alto member, or was the family renting in Alto on a holiday?

The latest report today indicates there were six occupants in the golf cart (the Mother, baby, & four small children, with a 5-yr old driving. Words just cannot describe the gross negligence involved in this tragic accident. It is probably a miracle that only one person was killed. There are many unanswered questions. Did anyone (like maybe the Father) see & not try to stop this group of SIX drive off in a golf cart that is meant to carry two persons (with a 5 yr old driving)?? This story is very hard to wrap your mind around isn't it?

Like I said.
You can't save them all from their own stupidity.

The golf cart was no where near the golf course. It was going down one of the steepest streets/hills in Alto Village as well. Golf carts are not made for high speeds or 6 people.

It was really crazy to let a 5 year old drive the cart at all much less on a public street that was so steep. It is amazing that the kids were not hurt more seriously.

Very sad deal.

Yes, it was a very sad & tragic event that should never have happened. Someone was terribly negligent, no doubt about that. I cannot imagine that "some adult" didn't had the common sense to have stopped this cart from even leaving their home with five children & one adult in it. But, with the only survivors being very small children, we'll most likely never know exactly what happened. Hopefully, the many grandparents (& parents) who regularly let their grandchildren drive their golf carts all over the streets of Alto will heed this wake-up call and "just say NO" to their children when they beg to drive the carts.

Does the county have some sort of un-defined liability for not enforcing the law about un- licensed vehicles operating on county roads?

They we go. Trying to deflect the liability onto someone else for their own ignorance and stupidity. Maybe the golf cart manufacturer as well for not having a stick warning against having 6 people in the cart with a child driving on a street.

Too bad all the survivors of this terrible tragedy aren't old enough to tell the complete story about how this accident happened, and what or who could've done something to have prevented it. There just HAD to have been someone there that could've said "don't do this, something terrible might happen".

Can't quite figure out why you were judged "clueless disagree mean" could be your wrinkly finger comment. All these old geezers up here living on social security voting for the magic underwear guy who wants to take away their source of income and healthcare are definitely clueless. That part about the death sentence was mean but true, but most likely it was the Mayan calendar comment now that is just paganism and up here we be the new Christians. You know the ones who believe in taking from the poor and giving to the rich (Hubbard). They that worship money, the word god is on money so best worship it. Paying tribute to religious organizations who will not punish the pedophile priest, in fact help those perpetrators elude justice. The new prince of peace religion that wants bullets over butter by cutting social programs and increasing the military budget, yea god.

According to one Mayan calendar translation it states “the end of the world as we know it”....I certainly hope so.

I think it goes without saying that parents in Lincoln County and Texas should be injucted from homeschooling their children. And they should have to be drug tested to home school. And they cant be on welfare to homeschool. Nope, get out there and lay some asphalt.
