And people wonder why crime is so rampant in Leesburg!!! They had one of their own trying to buy $300 in crack before he resigned. Leesburg PD needs to hand this off to the sheriff and Jay Evans along with the City Commission need to get their house in order.

Sounds like "Just One Voice" is Jay Evans himself...or someone who pulls the strings on Jay the Puppet. Either way, there's no excuse for anyone buying cocaine on our streets, especially a police officer. However, I'm pretty sure Ofc. Pinkston wasn't responsible for the double digit increase in violent crime last year. That sits firmly on the shoulders of the city leaders who have been driving out all of Leesburg's officers. 13 resignations in 10 months...in this economy? That's quality management.
If the city manager and the Leesburg commissioners choose not to support their officers, then they should get the sheriff's office to provide protection for their citizens. Do one, or the other before more people get hurt!

I'm not Jay Evans, nor a city, or county employee. I'm just another guy on the street wondering when the increase in crime will peak before the City manages to regain it's police presence in Carver Heights and other blighted areas of the Lakefront City. When you have neighbors robbing and killing their elderly neighbors you know crime is spiralling out of control and the youth have a blatant disregard for the law and their neighbors. I'm all for the Sheriff's department stepping and trying to bring it all back under control.

Yeah that would be great, instead of having 8 or 9 officers on the street each shift you would have 2 or 3 deputies covering the same area. I'm sure that would stomp crime out!
I'm also sure the majority of the police officers in Leesburg wouldn't mind being absorbed by the County either, last I checked they are WAY better paid and actually have a retirement!
OR, here is a crazy idea, pay the Leesburg Police Officers a FAIR wage and give them the tools to get the job done (yes tools cost money, the Sheriff has them)! Maybe the taxpayers should shoulder SOME of the burden of the $$$$ deficit in the City instead of further depleting employees salaries and benefits.

Yes it would be great, but you took the negative approach with dismissing the entire Leesburg Police Department. Nowhere did I say that, but you assumed that was my intent. Not so...

Instead of 8 or 9 officers trying to cover a growing area, the LCSO could step in and supplement the Leesburg PD while they try to recruit more officers. Now you have 12 officers available to maintain law and order. The Leesburg PD and the Sheriff's department already have this supportive relationship in place with the numerous events that are held downtown.

I stand corrected!
The only problem with that idea is that times are tough all over. If the Sheriff supplements the City of Leesburg, other areas of unincorporated Lake will be effected by less police coverage. The Sheriff cannot afford to pay overtime anymore than municipalities can.
I think the first step in helping Leesburg fight crime is to give the officers the resources to get it done. Resources = Money so it does not look like that will be happening anytime soon. Looks like the only people benefiting from the budget crunches are criminals!
