I had an American Girl doll growing up. Was she my favorite? No. But she had a special place in my heart. When my daughter turned 5, I bought her a doll. I realized after the fact: Just like everything else: I dramatically overpaid to give my daughter a memory. American Girl does promote healthy body stereotypes and outlooks, which are VERY HARD to find. I would continue to buy American Girl vs: Barbie or other products because they promote happy and healthy girls, not warped body images and sex.
Just my two cents.

We bought both our daughters these dolls when they were young. Now the Oldest has purchased a baby doll from American Girl for my grandaughter and is looking forward another few years when she can present her with Kirsten (The original American Girl) from when she was small. That would not be possible if you were just buying the $20 doll from your local discount retailer. Are these expensive? yes. Should you buy one for a 3 year old? no.

I bought my daughter her first AG doll after she received a Bratz doll from a well meaning relative (the bratz doll tragically was lost). Compared to all the electronic stuff we buy, I think the dolls are a good investment as a loved toy.

Great product and a good model for girls; but THEY ARE EXPENSIVE! In a tough enconomy I have to say no to the dolls and accessories and point the girls in a different direction

I loved American Girl books growing up, and my mom bought me a Samantha doll one year. Yes they're expensive, but worth it. I don't have any kids, but if I have a girl someday, I plan to give her my Samantha doll (along with my whole book collection).

It's all about profits. If revenues are increasing why let people go??
