When will people take a stand together and say "No" and not be pushed and herded like sheep. Have Americans become so lazy that all they can do is complain and take no action in fear of unjust consequences? This is the primary reason why the country is the way it is today.

Doesn't do any good to complain about the teachers because too many parents are like you and kiss up to the teachers and support them so your kids will be the chosen ones in class. Teachers in WV are not worth what they claim to be. Drug test the teachers and maybe I'll start respecting them a little but most don't deserve respect - |
||||
That is because most of them don't deserve respect and they make decent money for this state - if they wanted huge incomes they should have chosen a different career. |

I am from a very poor area in West Virginia and remember going through school with kids that if it wasn't for teachers spending their own money on these kids they would have never made it. How can you people diss the teachers who look out for their kids? Yes there are some bad teachers out there, I have had my share of them over the years, but there are teachers that do a lot of good even if that means the good is coming out of their own pocket.
Yes you might be able to afford the box of 164 Crayolas for your kid but what about the child next to them that can barely afford the fifty cent box of six or ten crayons from the dollar store? Respect the teachers who try to regulate their classrooms so no one feels left out and below the other children. |

1 Giving a teacher respect is "kissing up". So any person I have respect for...I am "kissing up"? Wrong. And I don't kiss up to anyone so my child will be "picked". What is that about? I, as well as any other parent, buy supplies, etc. for my child and the classroom. That's not kissing up, that's doing my part, AND not complaining about it. Drug tests are great and all, but there are ways around drug tests as we all know. And while were on the topic, I went in front of a judge over custody of my son, and made mention to the judge of my son's father's weekend habits. The Judge looked me square in the face and said, "What he does when he doesn't have your child is none of your or our business". So if that's the case, when it comes to a mother caring for her child, then how can we expect a teacher to be drug tested. What they do on their own time, is their business. I think we are becoming a country where to many POLICIES are inforced. It causes people to NOT CARE about the real issue, because so much stuff is FORCED on them. I don't think drug testing is a bad idea, but the next thing you know, there will be cameras in their homes. And you must remember, that teachers aren't the only one these policies will be forced on, NEXT it will be us as parents/grandparents. |

1 SO, because there are bad teachers (everywhere, not just in WV) they should all be rolled up into one big ball and judged as a whole? Predjudice that's what that is. ********** If someone in your family killed a.....Let's say they killed a cop. Would you want everyone in your whole entire family to be called "Cop Killer"? Would that be fair? Would that be right? Would that be just? NO, it wouldn't. Well, isn't that kind of what your doing. Because of your experience, your childs, or your grankids experience, you are judging ALL teachers! Not right. Also, concerning the money issue, teachers are moving from WV to get better pay elsewhere and our children are suffering for it. Most of the teachers in my son's school are either coming up on retirement age or are past retirment age, but continue to work due to income issues. Look around at WV Teachers, they are no spring chickens. Maybe that's because of the pay......??? Have you ever thought of that. {And I am using the "copkiller" scenario to get a point across, not to say anyone in your family has ever committed any crime at all. I do not know you or anyone in your family.} |

Not when you are a brand new school with a small budget to spend. |

What money are you talking about that teachers "get" for their budgets? I have never been given a cent to spend on supplies. I have to ask for them if I need it and lucky for me I have a fantastic school, department chairperson and principal who always try to find a way to find the funding for supplies---but sometimes it just is not there to give. TO make a statement that teachers don't budget correctly is yet another pice of evidence that non-educators do not have a clue what is really going on in classrooms and academic communities. It is sad that parents and non educators see things only in isolated instances and really do zero research to determine if they have a clue as to what they are saying. We teach children to think before they react----mom's and dad's generally react---in front of their children with no real evidence to support that reaction. As for the money---again---I have never seen a penny---no one has ever said to me---here is blank amount of money---use this for your personbal classroom. And YES, I go to SAM'S and buy Kleenex, pencils, paper on a fairly regularly basis--AND EVERY YEAR, I and many others recycle notebooks and writing tablets with left over paper in them for incoming students. I am not the exception to the rule----most of us do this automatically---and yes, it adds up after a while, but we have no choice---it is either that or let them snot all over me and the desks. Remember---it is not teachers asking for supplies---it is teachers letting you know that they have gone through the supplies that they have already furnished and now it is your turn. Your issue is not with teachers; it is with your county. One more thing, I wish everyone who knocks the education system would imagine all of us going on strike for one week----where would you find your child care---THAT is the reality of the situation, many people see us as childcare----I got paid 5.00 bucks an hour when I was a teenager to provide childcare---Now, after a BA degree, an MA degree and an additional endorsement (21 credits more)I get paid about 30 an hour for only 10 months a year----yes, even though I work 10 months---I do not get paid----people forget that, so if taking that into consideration, I make 25.00 an hour after paying over 60,000 for my levels of education.

This is my fifth year of teaching. As a music teacher, I have a lot of extra things to do (arranging music, planning shows, doing fundraisers, etc.) in addition to actually TEACHING. I have a laptop that I got for attending a training session over the summer (and before you start ripping on that, we worked 12 hours days at that training..it was probably one of the most difficult weeks of my life. I earned the laptop) and I carry it from school to home.If I ever leave the county, I give it back. If a teacher is taking a piece of equpiment home to do school related work, it isn't stealing. If they keep it forever, then it is. I can understand taking cameras and other equipment home to keep it safe. Despite what you may think, teachers do a huge amount of work. You have no idea of the paperwork we have to do (especially secial ed..oh I don't envy thme one bit.) I practically live my job, and if I stay at work till 10 pm I get nothing more than I get if I leave at 4:00. I think you'll find if you check most teachers have to be at work around 7:30 and leave around 4:00. we work a 40 hour week just like you. So many people see that planning time as "free" time..it is not. I spend my planning time writing plans, arranging fundraisers, filling out paperwork..I don't just sit and stare. Back to the supply issue, I ordered pencils and paperand things like that. It was explained to me that we can't require kids to bring their own supplies. I can't even ask my choir to pay for their own uniforms. we have to do fundraisers. Please don't rip on teachers until you have spent a few days in our shoes. I know there are unfair things that go on, I've seen it myself, but complaining does no good in a vacuum. As for drinking and drug use, we have a reasonable suspicion policy. If we get hurt, we are tested. if someone suspects something we can be tested. as long as it isn't affecting someone's job performance, who cares what they do on their own time?
