Machine guns' location unknown
#1 Jan 1, 2012
Like so many other "news" items, there seems to be a "hidden agenda" at work here. The photo and text leave a firearms-ignorant reader with the belief that, "...in mere seconds, and show you where the sear goes in to turn the rifle into a machine gun." Of course, what can be done "in mere seconds" is open up the firearm's "upper" for cleaning and maintenance; precisely as designed for rough tactical handling. Inserting a different sear assembly in the "lower" as designed (along with the required fire selector) is not a simple matter of drop-in easily-available parts as the writer of the "news" story would have the reader assume. Also, the fact Mr. Neilson refuses to refer to the semi-automatic military clone as an "assault rifle" is appropriate. Per military definition, the semi-auto rifle is just that, a semi-auto rifle, and not an "assault rifle." The remainder of the article does seem to report that Mr. Neilson, in an effort to test "the letter of the law," is being hosed. There are a few parallels to similar "legal justice" used in the case of Randy Weaver, for which no one, barring Weaver's friends and family, ever paid the price. That's another story for another day, however.

From the article..."Nielsen, who is licensed to build, manufacture and sell his own weapons, can take apart a semi-automatic rifle - he refuses to call it an assault rifle..."
That's because "assault rifle" is not a proper firearm-related term. Rifles don't "assault" anyone. It is an action by one person onto another. It is a term dreamed up by the media to induce fear and make their stories seem more sensational.
