Recently received a recall notice on my '97 F-150 pickup that Ford wanted to replace the gas tank hanger straps. This was in areas where the vehicle is subject to road salt corrosion damage.

Called Barnett, in Jackson, was informed they were out of the straps, but would call me when they were available. Received the call and took in the truck. The repair took only 20 minutes. As the keys were handed back to me I was informed that "The gas tank is now leaking at the rear strap." HUH? It wasn't leaking before? How much to fix it? "Dunno, a new ford tank is over $1000, I might be able to get a aftermarket tank for $350-400." Will you call me with a price? "OK"

I then drove to Kroger to pick up some things and upon returning to the truck noticed a puddle of gas under the tank. Sure enough, it was leaking at the rear hanger strap. Returned home and checked where I park it and there was no gas leakage apparent. Also, as I'm retired and only use the truck once or twice a week don't put a lot of gas in it so would have noticed it being suddenly "low."

Called Barnett and asked if they had a price for the new tank yet? "No, we don't." asked if they could "do anything" for me since it wasn't leaking before? "No we can't." Was also THEN informed that the tank was leaking "before" they touched it.

Called my regular mechanic who said the replacement was $300 total. The truck is now there getting a new tank. He reminded me that the tank was pulled to put in a new fuel pump 2 months ago and was OK then???

Maybe it's me, "but there's something wrong with this picture." A vehicle is pulled into a large service bay and is leaking gas on the floor and that's OK? The customer who is sitting in the waiting area adjacent to the service area isn't informed? IF the tank was initially leaking the new straps were installed anyway knowing the tank would have to be replaced? A major dealership service department isn't interested in giving quotes on mechanical repairs?

Lots of interesting coincidences around here...:-)

Who is your regular mechanic? I need someone to work on my F150. Hard to find someone I can afford AND trust.
