I have heard of this old story from like the 40,s maybe that a girl got killed on that hill and now she apparently gets in your car at the bottom and gets out at the top...I know this sounds stupid but...as we were in the woods at the top of that hill we found an old tombstone of a young girl whos name was Kizzea Rhodes...died in 1886...anyone ever heard this old ghost story?

There's a Kizzie Rose in my family tree from Jackson county, never heard the story, do you know anything else about it, like who her parents were or how she got killed? Thanks for posting this.

May 1965

It was a dark and stormy night. The lightning flashed and the thunder rolled. The fog was thick and swirling in the car headlights. He was on his way to work the third shift at the Bluegrass Army Depot at Richmond. He drove the long and lonely trip five nights out of every week. It was a long and tiresome drive but since jobs were scarce in his hometown it was his only option to provide a good life for his family. He often thought about how spending a four year stint in the U.S. Marines had helped him get a good job and was very thankful for his decision to enlist.

As he slowly started down the area of road known as Big Hill his thoughts were on his wife and young children at home. He was thinking about how he needed to be careful because they were depending on him, when suddenly there was a figure in white ahead in the beam of the car's headlights. It appeared to be a young girl walking along the edge of the road next to the white wooden posts and the rusty metal cable which was supposed to prevent cars from sliding over the steep cliff. He came to a stop and peered through the windshield as the windshield wipers slapped back and forth in the heavy rain and fog. He couldn't believe his eyes and couldn't believe anyone would be out on such a night. He rolled down the passenger-side window and told the girl to get in out of the rain.

She opened the rear door of the old Chevy Impala and slid into the back seat. He asked her what she was doing out so late and in such a bad storm. She simply said "mister, please take me home." Since he was busy concentrating on scanning the roadway for rocks and trees that might have slid off the steep cliffs above he really didn't say much as they headed on down the hill. Once they reached the bottom of the hill he asked here where she lived. He did not hear an answer so he asked her again where she wanted him to take her to. There was still no reply so he switched on the Impala's interior dome light and looked into the rear view mirror but he didn't see anyone in the back seat.

He knew there was a drive-way just ahead where he could pull off the road. As soon as he pulled over he shifted the car into park and got out and opened the back door. There was no one there and there were no signs of anyone being in the backseat of the car at all.

LOL, this is my fictional spin on the story you refer to. I heard it many times when I was a kid. It is said that people traveling Big Hill late at night (I've heard both up and down) would see a girl/woman and pick her up and when they got to either the top or bottom the car would be empty. This would have been on the old road before they cut through the mountain for the new road.

There is an old song which the Country Gentlemen used to sing called "Bringing Mary Home" which I will post below. I suspect this story may have originated from this song. Then again, maybe the song was written about the "ghost girl of Big Hill" :)

Bringing Mary Home as sung by the Country Gentleman. I know Mac Wiseman sung this song too and there were probably others.

I was driving down a lonely road one dark and stormy night
When a little girl by the roadside showed up in my headlights
I stopped and she got in back and in a shaky tone
She said: My name is Mary, please won't you take me home?

She must have been so frightened all alone there in the night
There was something strange about her, for her face was deathly white
She sat so pale and quiet in the back seat all alone
I'll never will forget that night I took Mary home

I pulled into the driveway where she told me to go
Got out to help her from the car and opened up the door
But I just could not believe my eyes 'cause the back seat was bare
I looked all around the car but Mary wasn't there

A light shone from the porch, someone opened up the door
I asked about the little girl that I was looking for
Then a lady gently smiled and brushed a tear away
She said: It sure was nice of you to go out of your way

But thirteen years ago today a wreck just down the road
Our darling Mary lost her life and we miss her so
Thank you for your trouble and the kindness you have shone
You're the thirteenth one who's been here bringing Mary home
