Well said JAV. Also, let's remeber Wegman's has ben voted "Best Place to Work" time and time again.

Nothing beats the cheerful and helpful folks you find at a Wegman's. REFRESHING after dealing with the surly miserables at Safeway and Giant...

I love Wegmans and look forward to having one locally. In reality, if quality and cost of Giant & Safeway's products were good, then they should not have to worry. Wegmans has terrific quality AND excellent customer service. Plus, folks will come from surrounding areas to shop at Wegmans. It's a win/win for Columbia and Howard County.

I can hardly wait for Wegmans to show up in HoCo - I often drive up to Hunt Valley because I am so tired of Safeway ($$$) and Giant. Wegmans is a pleasure.

Wegmans appears ready to start construction of its Columbia supermarket -- at least according to the building permit that Wegmans applied for on June 30, 2009.

An employee of Wegmans Construction in Rochester applied to build a temporary construction trailer at 8895 McGaw Road. That is the site across from Apple Ford where Wegmans has been talking about a new store since at least 2006. A county employee appears to have done a "building review" on July 1, 2009, but there isn't a permit issued yet.

This confirms comments by Wordbones -- who is the source for Wegmans construction news -- on the Tales of Two Cities blog. In June, Wordbones wrote that their local attorney said the company had prevailed against legal challenges. The attorney did not have a date for a Columbia opening then, and the Wegmans Web site still said "TBD" today and listed it behind two stores to open in 2010. About five months ago, Wordbones heard that Wegmans was aiming for early 2011.

You can check application B09001570 yourself at the Howard County Web site. Just search for all permits on McGaw Road in June 2009.

The point is that county employees/appointees and electeds went outside of our laws to approve this store. Of course everyone wants a Wegmans, but we also don't want county government meting out priviledge for some while holding the remainder of us beyond the letter of the law.

I am dying to find out if anyone has news on this matter? The application on county website doesn't tell you much. just the phone # of the company providing the trailer and construction cost of $400.

I echo what has already been remarked by residents of Howard County. HOPE WEGMAN'S COMES SOON, WE NEED YOU.

I love the Wegmans in HV so it's good news they are coming to Columbia. However, Harris Teeter is the best of breed for the last two years in Howad County(sorry Trader J.) The store in Kings Contrivance and a new one in Maple Lawn are amazing.

In late January 2011, Wegmans submitted its building permits to build the one-story store "mezzanine" and the two-story parking garage.
