A jury handed down the verdict yesterday - a day before the victim's 20th birthday - in Howard County Circuit Court after about four hours of deliberation.

Ya know, I really cannot get over the fact that so many youth have guns and knives and think that it is cool to kill someone. When I was younger, we fought with our fists, if we had to fight at all. I am the first to admit, sometimes you have to fight, even if you don't want to. It is cowardly to use a weapon, why can't you be a real man or woman, so you think you are, and fight the real way. KNUCK UP people, stop hiding behind weapons, throw dem bows if you have to, but using weapons is cowardly. 16 years old carrying a gun, damn, that is some crazy shit. As a parent, I would be a bit embarrassed. This kind of stuff happening in Columbia, unreal. Parents, if your children are hanging around in the wrong crowd, it is up to you to make that change. Talk to your children. When you kill, you deserve to serve your time. Sad thing, some of these kids don't even mind going to jail.

im glad justice was served for shawn. i knew him since kindergarten. I was there and remember vividly when he lost both his mother and father a year apart and all he had left was his brother, sister, and kind uncle who took him in. Shawn was a person everyone liked and loved and could never forget. He had a passionate spirit. Even after he moved to Columbia I would think about him time to time. For those of you who are defending the murderer, realize he took a life too young and he took away a good friend, brother, son, and nephew. Rest In Peace Shawn. We love you.

Monti shot a kid IN THE BACK. He is a COWARD, and for that, he gets to live the remaining ~60 years of his life in prison. What a hero. In ten years, none of you ignorant CHILDREN will ever think about your homeboy monti much less remember his name.

Columbia is GOING TO SHIT.

I hope Kevin gets out in the 6 1/2 years. Try doing some more research before you read a 2 paragraph snippet and make such harsh comments.
I knew both groups of kids, and they both were far from angels. I didn't like either group of kids. Something like this was bound to happen to one or both of them eventually. In the past year alone they had many run ins with the law and drugs.
Point being: Kevin went to the fight to watch. Most people will watch a fight if they know it's going down. It's human nature. While watching, he saw his friend in a fight and getting beaten to the ground. He didn't step in, his friend got into a fight and lost.
Than after that, he saw Robert get up and stand over the kid, preparing to beat him AGAIN after he was already on the ground beaten badly.
Kevin didn't bring a bat and had no intentions of fighting ahead of time. He went there out of curiosity. He took one swing, and a lot happens very fast in a fight. For all you know he aimed at this kids back and by the time he swung the kid had moved.
On the other hand:
Robert, helped instigate the fight, went there with every intention of fighting and was also intoxicated. He beat a kid to the ground and then stood over him, preparing to beat him again. Before he had a chance to hit was hit once.
Both of them made their own decisions, they are both old enough to do that. Roberts family should not gain any financial benefit from this horrible incident by filing a law suit, both families have already been through so much. You're a horrible person for making judgment when you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. These two teens didn't have any arguments or differences, Kevin didn't go to Hammond high school. Again, went there to watch not to fight.
Yes, people do know that Klink didn't have intentions to kill, it's been stated many times in many articles, Which is why the murder charges were dropped. Again, Research could be your friend if you didn't believe everything that was hand fed to you and did a little bit of investigating yourself.
It doesn't take much to kill someone when you hit them in the wrong spot. Fist, bat, I don't care what you're using. If Kevin went there with intentions of harming people (like Robert did) than I would say send him away for longer. But he was merely defending his friend. If he wasn't there, you may be giving the same speech about how Robert isn't in jail long enough because he just may heave beaten that kid to death.
I would agree with you in that situation because he went there to fight.
I also know I wouldn't participate in such a foolish fight, but if for some reason or any reason I ever ended up in a 'brawl' and was beaten to the ground, I would hope one of my friends would grab a bat and come to the rescue before watching me get beat again. I just wish they wouldn't be so unfortunate as to hit someone in a spot where they die after one contact.
try doing some research, if you're from Maryland like it says you are, you can easily call news stations or talk to people around Mt Hebron who know what happened. Or hell, most of the information I gave you is available readily on the internet with a little bit of searching.

I went to middle school with Shawn and i went to gateway with Kevin. Shawn was a cool dude no he wasn't a Angel but he didn't deserve to die point blank period. I didn't like kevin or his brother they thought they could beat up on anyone. Monti got what he deserves when he pulled that gun out did he think about shawn's family the answer is no. Maybe young people need to wake up and realize we're killing each other. R.I.P. SHAWN 18 is to young
