Life expectancy in U.S. trails top nations

There are 5 comments on the www.cnn.com story from Jun 18, 2011, titled Life expectancy in U.S. trails top nations. In it, www.cnn.com reports that:

Life expectancy in most U.S. counties lags behind that of the world's healthiest nations, in some cases by 50 years or more, according to a new analysis of government data.

Given the increasing life expectancy in countries like Canada and Australia, the widespread pattern of decline in the U.S. is "a huge surprise," says Christopher Murray, M.D., one of the study's coauthors and the director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, in Seattle.

"We all know from previous work that there are great [life expectancy] disparities in the U.S. across counties, but I sort of expected that when we compared progress in counties to what's possible that we would be keeping up," Murray says. "And we're not."

The authors suggest that smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, and other behaviors and conditions that contribute to poor health and early deaths might be responsible.

Locally tailored programs that aim to help people quit smoking, lose weight, and otherwise improve their health may help reverse the troubling life-expectancy trends, they say.

"There needs to be more investments in policies and programs at local as well as state and national levels to move those metrics," agrees David Kindig, Ph.D., an emeritus professor of population health sciences at the University of Wisconsin, in Madison, who was not involved in the study.

Kindig adds, however, that it's just as important to invest in programs that, for example, boost education and employment, because social and economic factors also drive health outcomes.

Maybe the new healthcare law will help, much as Conservatives and Republicans hope otherwise and are still fighting against affordable effective medical insurance for everyone.

The new healthcare law provides minimum standards for companies that want to sell medical insurance...only God knows why conservatives and republicans think that medical insurance companies have the right to kick people off of their policies for getting sick, ect...oh wait, they worship more MONEY for corporations and the rich over everything else as that is their goal.

You have a choice of whether or not to make enough to buy medical insurance if you want it, and the medical insurance companies have a choice to kick you off of their policy for getting sick. What is it that you don't like about freedom? Unrestricted capitalism makes everything better. You go against the founders and flag and soldiers and rainbows! Move to North Korea if you want medical insurance for everyone. This is America!

Really? With jobs in the US going to every country due to today's new free trade (moving to slave wage countries) just everyone has a choice of how much they want to make?

Freedom is not politicians merging with mega- corporations and giving the mega-corporations free reign to move to other countries and enslave those countries employees. The founding fathers warned against monopolies and foreign entanglements.

So if anyone is going against freedom, the flag, Mom's apple pie, etc it is you.

Soldies and rainbows? You mean when a soldier buys the farm fighting to enrich corporations, he/she sees rainbows?

I don't know if you are joking or just have a tad too much Jim Beam under the belt.

What position are you in to tell anyone where to move?
