Just wondering what everyone thinks about the recent teachers that were fired due to budget cuts? Sadly the newspaper made these teachers look incompetent which is not the case! The fact is they made too much money!

The names of the 2nd firing to reduction in force:Chuck Nall East Music, Glenda Mangrum K-8, Pat Ortiz K-8, Jane Hunsucker Center K-8, Melissa Kennedy East K-8, M. Vincent East K-8. These are GOOD teachers. I sure wish the Superintendent job was an elected position so their would be someone (because the Board will not) that would not be afraid to tell him that he is not making good decisions. It's suppose to be because of budget woes and how the Commission took 2cents away from them which is not true but the superintendent still has money to re-do baseball fields, hire surveryor's for football field expansion and laying some sod. So here's the question: Is sports more important than having educators to teach our kids? And if all these teachers are not needed, why where they on the payroll to begin with? Hmmmmm. The Board needs to do some explaining to the parents with what exactly their priorties really is with educating our children because evidently they support their main employee's decision without any questions.

I don't think $35,000 salary was the issue. As you can see,$35,000 is less than what all other systems pay. The 'reduction in force' education rules are very vague and it's the golden opportunity to let tenured teachers go with the reason being 'budget funding'. The job ax is out in Hickman County and the Board is not asking any questions to why or how the selection was made.

You don't have to look very far to see where this superintendent’s loyalty is placed. Just look at the number of high paid jobs the superintendent has given board member’s kin. The board members are not concerned about the money because if the real cuts were made it would be to their kin. This is the superintendent that hid $4,000,000 in school accounts and then decided he needed to go ask for the tax payers to help support his mismanagement of funds and the school board didn’t do anything about it. These are good teachers and the word is out that he already has some hired within 5 days of letting these teachers go. These teachers have good ratings. It is all about power and that is what this superintendent is very much about. This board is not going to do anything . Their wives, son-in-law, fathers, and cousins have too $$$$$$ much to lose.

The Board had no problem with spending $144,000 in hiring a company to tell them to turn off the lights in the same month they started claiming budget problems & cutting teachers. The rumor also is that some positions are being replaced by family members of already employed teachers. Neoptism is wild in the system. Hire someone in management or a hard to fill position like coaching and find a job for the spouse to get them here seems to be a trend. The kids education doesn't seem to be the first priorty and the scores shows this fact. The teachers that have been here for years scores take up the slack for all the new teachers in the system. Just take a look at the high turnover rate & new faces in the classroom-that is a definate indication something is wrong. In system politics & nepotism is taking away for the education of our kids!

I think these teachers should sue the board for their jobs back, especially if they are good teachers and get good results. If the superintendent gets by with this, good teachers will be laid off just because they they are not kin to the board or the superintendent. Every teacher in Hickman County should be pushing for a stronger contract and active in their union. This is the reason you need unions, to protect against mismanagement.

It would be interesting to know what %(percent) of the teacher population are union and then what percent of the laid of teachers where union. We are hearing rumors of additional tenured teachers being transferred to soon to be abolished Federal created positions that will last only a year or two. That means more layoffs in the future! Wonder if the majority of those transfers are union.

It doesn't make any difference if they are Union or Not. This superintended/school board does NOT care.

Could someone give me more facts on the alleged nepotism and "high paid jobs the superintendent has given board member’s kin"?
Readers need facts - names, dates, places, figures. That's the only way it can be looked into. Send me a private message if need be.

To wanted teachers, several of these salaries were closer to 60,000 because some of those teachers they fired had their doctorate or masters plus thirty. So, it doesn't set a good example to fire the teachers with the most ambition. These teachers were in fact told it was because of budget cuts. New teachers were hired over the summer. Some of the teachers that were fired were placed on a rehire list. So my problem is why would they be made to look like bad teachers in the article in the paper but still be put on a rehire list. Something just doesn't make sense!

Jewell Prince's son-in-law Mike Plunkett is the school maintenance supervisor he has been with the system for 4 years. Now Mike Plunkett has hired his son-in-law Brian Delaney on the maintenance payroll. Plus Jackie Deitman's dad Alfred Williams works for the maintenance dept.

As one of those teachers that were fired, all I can say is you are absolutely correct. It doesn't make any sense. I am on the rehire list, but fortunately I got a much better job with a $4500.00 pay raise. I seriously doubt that I would ever return to Hickman co. The teachers in Hickman Co. are too scared of Jerry Nash to speak up. As you can see, he has the school board in his pocket. You might also be interested in knowing that as the board was getting rid of us they gave Nash a $5000.00 pay raise and a $2000.00 bonus.

One thing I found surprising is that the substitute teachers in Hickman County Schools only need a high school diploma to teach. Does that surprise anyone else??
