A prime example of why Centerville is becoming a ghost town. Rite Aid run an aid in the paper this week on their sale items. Maxwell House coffee 34.5 oz buy one get one free. Well that appears to be a wonderful buy and worth a drive to seek such a bargain but think again! The price of the coffee (the one you have to buy to get one free) was $12.99. The Dollar store has the same size and brand of coffee for $6 and WalMart has it for $6.88. This is a good example of why no one comes to Centerville to shop anymore and if things don't change our beloved Centerville will become like the old Western ghost towns of long ago. It's time for business managers and owners to take a second look how to entice customers. Perhaps lessons could be learned from the new Chappell's Cee Bee's.Now those people know how to put on a sale worth driving for!

You can go to Walmart 30 min in three directions from Centerville. Or drive to Sams club and hour in 2 directions. You can save more by doing this and buying what you need once a month that you ever could by only buying in Centerville. And get your gas while as SAms club too for less than here. Years ago when our county fathers did want I40 to run thru Centerville, Dickson jumped at the chance. They have grown where we have not. Walmart coming to Hickman county was shot down as well. It would have created jobs here, and kept the bussiness that are here from gouging us. We have Pamida, but it is just a cut down version of walmart. And has anybody else noticed that the parking lot of Pamida is always empty? Or that they spaces out the store to make it look like there was as much in it as when it 1st opened? Until we get new industy here, and let these big changes happen here, we will continue to be left behind. The only money I spend here is when I forgot to pick something up elsewhere.

I have to say that sadly, I agree with both of you on this. I have lived in this town for 15 years now and have seen very little growth. The area where I originally moved from was much like Centerville 15 years ago but now is booming. I think that our town leadership, as well as our county leadership, needs to get off of their rear ends and attempt to recruit business to the area. If they don't do it now it's just going to get worst for the citizens. If the city and county are not collecting any sales tax, then they will increase the property, wheel, and utility taxes to compensate.

I agree. No wal-mart. None of the larger grocery stores like Kroger/Bi-lo ect. No real name brand car dealerships (no, I dont consider the Ford dealer that we do have as being a real dealer. They push recalls off on other dealers. And dont really have a selection.) Only one 24 hour gas station that I know of, that isnt all the way out by I-40. The one real hotel in Centerville isnt a National chain anymore since they lost their "Days Inn" name, and the way it was built was a waste of space. That area could have held a lot more. In fact next to the now vaccant Movie gallery waa a prime are to build a real shopping plaza/store fronts. But no, they built more houses! Centerville has enough problems with trying to figure out where something could be built that isnt going to flood without just slapping up more houses next to the main highway. And what about the Centerville square? Most of the stores are vaccant, and with good reason. If you have an idea of something interesting, they wont rent to you. Or the church strangle hold on this town wont let you do it. And most rent in Centerville for commercial buildings is way too high, and for old buildings that need repair.. There are people with nothing else better to do that sit and talk at night on the square. Bussiness like Never Ending Stories gave people somewher to go. When the square was full, they basicly rolled up the sidewalks at dark. There needs to be bussiness that could stay open till 11pm-12am. There are so many things that I have seen in my travels that could be made to work on the square. Somebody could open up a lazer tag/arcade/pool room/indoor golf. But with the way the buildings are, they would have to be remodeled. And I am not talking about the pool hall establishment of the past. I am talking about a clean place with security cameras. And another thing, Hickman county is so far in the past with its laws. Doess the county legislative body have a clue how much money is going to other counties just in liquor sales????? Do the powers that be really believe that it isnt here, or that only they have it at the country club? The same people that go elsewhere to spend money on everything else bring it back as well. Maybe one day this place will wake up, but I doubt it. Morons.

This county is a joke. This is where i call home, but everyday I make the commute to nashville or another county to work.no jobs,no recreation,no stores,or anything interesting here.A bunch of yahoos run this show, and the biggest buisness is the law system.the courts, police, judges, county officials, and lawyers.they like it how it is.they just take money in, that we go work and bring into this county. Its easier that way,you dont have to do anything.they should build a big bypass around centerville, and let east hickman grow the way it should.oh yeah, they dont want any big buisness to come in here, because that would bring smart people that would have thier jobs.

I remember a very different Centerville. Not a ghosttown. A town where people went to shop. Now the only time you may go is when you have to go to the funeral home.

Let me encourage everyone to shop as often as you can in Hickman County. If our elected officals will not work to encourage business here, lets do so ourselves.

The east end of the county needs to be encouraged by the current administation to organize. However, how often do we see our mayor here. Something as simple as a welcoming sign (nice not overly expensive) for the county at 46, 100, 7 would be an upgrade to how we meet our visitors. I know that people are looking at this website. Pleae note your suggestions.

What keeps Centerville alive? The local government and school system. Has anyone bothered to look at the financial records on our County website? If you looked you would see repeatedly Prince Hardware, Fish Camp, Farm House, Owens Oil etc. The purchases are not equally supportive of small businesses countywide; moreover, this is how the township survives. If growth is going to happen it will have to be by the effort of the people cause our county leaders either don't want growth or they are to busy sitting on their rumps to do anything. Riding on the skirt tails of Minnie hasn't and isn't going to work. WE THE PEOPLE ARE SICK OF THE HOOP DA LA!

How can you buy local when we all work out of town. There no jobs in retail here or really no jobs unless you work for county goverment. People buy close to work on their way home from Nashville. It sad when largest chain store in the county is the Dollar General Stores. Chappells has brought a big change to Centerville at least the food fresh now not roten anymore. The problem with county officals don't buy local either you see them at Walmart, Kroger, TSC and Big Lots ect..We also need things for our young people to do this county. Ther no past time for families can do to gether so we are teaching our young that you have do everything away from home nothing close. So if have counrty offical job your set you can spend money that not yours and don't care if helps you neighbor or not because you can retire with no worry and you don't care if made change for your community your just out for yourself.

We, the taxpayers, are even paying 70% of the County employees medical insurance. I don't know of any other employers that do that! Now the appointed Departments heads are wanting longevity pay on their already $50,000+ salaries. Any County Commissioner's who support more spending is going to be focused on next election. THE GOVERNMENT SPENDING HAS GOT TO STOP!!!!!!

If County employees want to complain or request more perks then they need to be like the rest of us-Go find a job that meets your expectations, and drive 2 hours to and from work. There is plenty of people waiting in line for a government job and would be less gready just to have a local paying job without all the perks the Co. employees get now.

perks? Are you kidding me? I have worked for the county for about four years now and I don't receive any perks? We just now finally got longevity pay. Any other adjacent county out there has way more benefits than Hickman County does.

Perks is 8 to 4 hours all red letter holidays, 70% of $1000 month premium medical insurance paid by someone other than the employee, retirement paid by someone other than the employee, not having to punch in and out on a clock, 30 min drive to and from work, comp time, sick time and not lets forget with so many years of service family medical insurance mostly paid for by the taxpayers. If County employees want longevity pay then go to work with the State or one of the adjacent counties. Taxpayers here can not afford any more perks or County employees. In the last 15 years the number of County employees has tripled in comparison to the increase of population that they serve. Everybody has had to cut back on their budgets except for the local government and now they have the nerve to ask for more!

This commissioner is for smaller government and less taxes. There is waste that can be cut. Money spent on athletic fields and superintendants pay raise that could be spent on educating our kids. Road Superintendent gave comp time to workers before he left but the county had to borrow money. Pay raises to county employees with so many unemployed and out of work in the county. Can anyone add more please do so.

Agree. The school board spends money on football fields that we could do without and they appear to be spending money like water but I would just about put money on a bet the board will be asking the taxpayers for more money within the next two years. One board member said they did not even know the project had been approved to begin and that there had only been discussions about it. Now how is that? Who is in charge? It's hard to tell anymore. Spending money on books and education (instead of sports for the few who play) would be a better investment of my tax payer dollars. Nothing makes sense anymore.

Even though I work for the county I do agree with some of what is being stated here. I do see a waste of taxpayer money when it comes to ALOT of things that the board of education spends money on. The new football fields if definitely one them. Why couldn't they just use the brand new field at the highschool??? That would of made alot more sense and saved alot more money.

For the last 2 years, the East Middle School was using the high school field and it worked out very well. Parking problems and no admission money was lost because of gate containment. It almost appears as if the Board members are clueless to what is going on in the schools and it's grounds. And don't bot her to go to a board meeting cause you will not know what is going on and work sessions are in a little office not room for visitors but 2 or 3. They beg us for our support but don't act like they want to hear from us parents. I went to the board meeting over discussion of a local road behind the high school being evaluated for closing for the purpose of having the Centerville High School contained from passer by's. The East schools grounds are locked up to where the taxpayers can not even enjoy the track or tennis court and the school grounds are the taxpayer's property. Will this be next for the Centerville High School to where we can't walk the track? The school is always begging for money and claiming they don't have money to pay teachers so they had a reduction in force but the baseball fields where re done back in the spring, a new soccer field last fall opened and now a new football field under construction at East. It makes no sense and if a Board member did not know about the football field construction prior to the work beginning, then there apparently is a problem. Will be interesting to look at our School report card in comparisson to our surrounding counties.

I spend my money in the county that I work in the prices are higher in this county for everything they want you to spend your money here but they sure dont worrry about trying to bring any jobs here to get a job here you have to know sombody if one person gets a job before you know it the whole family is working there for instance the sheriff's office there are four people working there that are very close related if there was a tragedy in the family the whole department would be off,a lot of places husbands and wives are not allowed to work in the same place.I dont think in this kind of work this should be allowed, you know if anything happened husband and wives, brothers and sisters are going to cover each others butts everything in this county is a family affair there are a lot of family's where somebody needs a job,but this county is run by just a few family's,too bad all of us cant have that advantage

Great point. Judge Sam Smith's family has the connections for sure. His wife's sister is an elected official (I believe its elected.) So she has gotten her daughter and daughter-in-law jobs. Then Smith's son's baby mama...lol....whose husband happens to work for the sheriff's department. That all kills me. So many educated people in this town with a brain, but they just aren't buddy buddy with the right people.:/
