The legislators must be in office 10 years to get their health insurance for life. The rest of the county workers have to work for the county for 25 years to get theirs for life. I did not see anywhere in here that said that they did not pay a share of the cost.

After the failure of the County to negotiate a deal with Basset( Valley Health Services),they are again announcing that they have at least three local interested parties willing to purchase and or operate services. The initative to remove the County from management of this facility and vital services is a good one. The have shown that they are incapable and unwilling to do what is necessary for the residents and taxpayer regarding these public services and facility.
Strong considration and support of privatizing operation and mangement of the county's correctional services should be explored as well.
These two public services/ mandates and their current financial and facilities conditions, prove this.
Very troubling is the amount of effort and finances devoted to their version of what is in the best interest of County residents. Plans to construct a 35 million dollar jail facility, financed through a1/4 % sales tax and bonding of 19 million dollars, compared to zero or minimal investment to care for our county's elderly and needy.
Kudo's to Legislator's Hartman, Schrader, and Rose, who realize this, and are working hard to change this and find real long lasting solutions.
Next election, support these individuals and those who realize that we have the wrong priorities here, and need a new way of thinking and providing public services.

The County Legislature( majority) claims that they are losing nearly $500,000 anually in operations associatd with this facilty.
First of all its not their money to lose, but rather the taxpayers. Secondly, government services always cost money. The job of the Legislature is to manage operations in such a way as to provide adequate services,at the lowest possible costs. This also entails allocating and raising adequate revenues to cover these expenses.
They have no problem with a sales tax to pay for a correctional facility, and have millions in surplus funds, yet hav the gull to say that they are opertaing at a loss.
They should get out of the adult assisted living business and let the private sector( not for profits) take over.
Voters don't forget how the County got in tis mess, poor management and poor priorities, keep voting these same people in and you will continue to get the same results.Have'n't we had enough?

Good Lord, do you Herkimer County residents want your county to be run like Oneida County & lose money? O.C. is in the red with a poor bond rating. You should be HAPPY you have good legislators that have a brain rather than these O.C. legislators that have NONE.

But you're complaining? Sheesh...

It's all smoke and mirrors. They will just lock the door and sell the place. they just want to be able to say they tried to sell it. I have tried to find out who these guys are. Not much on them. Why don't they give us some more information. The paper says the county is requesting assisted living beds for this company. Who are they are why is the county doing this for them. It looks like it is all a games and yet people live there, work there. They are cruelly playing with their lives. Shame on the.

You seem to be missing the point, "Watcher". Of COURSE we would all love to finance social services, assistant living centers, etc. It's just not feasible for any community (federal or local) to be involved in a money losing operation. Everyone screams about their taxes going up, yet some want the county to lose $500,000 per year because of empathy with the Country Manor residents?

There are many assistant living homes in this area who are already meeting the state mandated criteria; these residents are not going to be thrown out on the street.

Name the Assistant Living Homes in this area. I think you are wrong. Check it out. These residents are poor. IF you find an assistant living home, call and see if they take someone with no insurance or state coverage. You won't find one! They have mismanaged it for years. For sure non-government would be better. Let's face it this is all a game. This deal will fall through and they will try to throw them out. watch!

Hey Barb, All government is a "money losing operation". That's why government taxes to pay for the money losing operations! It's about priorities. I say turn the home over to people who can run it better, make government leaner, and while your giving away all the programs, let's get rid of some of the fat cat administrators. Smaller government, less to administer. OH..let's cut that Legislature too. How about 9 of them screwing with our lives rather than 17. Savings there too in their free insurance, fat pensions and patronage jobs. WOW. Maybe taxes could actually go down 2% rather than up!!

Banker I agree with all you say. With Herkimer County Legislators touting such a large surplus and being in the black,is nothing more than an admission of being overtaxed and under served.
A balanced budget with perhaps a 6% rainy day fun is sufficient.
