This article and another I read refer to this year as the last Canal Classic.
Why is it the last?

Good article.
TIGER GRANTS are being requested for the bike trail. I hear the whole thing is getting paved and bathrooms, showers, and campsites will be considered.

Obviously ALBANY EAR is kidding.
TIGER GRANTS deadline was Sept 15 2009.
TIGER GRANTS purposes are nothing like a bike trail.
TIGER GRANTS minimum size is 20 million.

TIGER III to award grants totaling $527 million, down from 2010’s $600 million
The Department of Transportation on Thursday announced a slightly scaled-down version of its popular TIGER transportation infrastructure grant program for 2011.

If we had a CITY MANAGER you'd have heard about this by now.

Now I've read...
Although they billed it as the LAST Canal Classic...
They aren't making a decision regarding the race's future...
For six more months!
I'm confused.

I remember almost the same words, except the term 'Considered' wasn't used. The group Rails to Trails were secure in the fact that monies sufficient to provide potable water, restrooms, and campsites had been set aside by the federal government for this. The monies were to be distributed as the local municipalities put forth their share. This program was to provide matching funds, not foot the whole bill. This was in the '80's. At that time, in the early rounds of distribution, there were arguements about the path the trail would take. Rails to trails would only subsidize trails on rail beds. There was a lot of fightiing. In the meantime, with only 2 out of 3 funding sources involved, it became more expensive at the local level. You're slow, you blow it!
