Someone close to me is a social worker. She is well aware of what panhandling is all about. If there are folks panhandling on one corner when there is a shelter on another, it means one thing: They want the money for drugs. Period, end of story. She even works with people who will use the money they panhandled to get themselves a hotel room as well because they aren't allowed in the shelter if intoxicated.

What is needed is education. People in the city need to know to never give these people money. Some cities post little signs to that effect or give out pamphlets describing what I did above.

You want to help these people? When they hold out their hand to you tell them "the shelter is over there, get out of my face"

What's needed, as usual, is a good dose of common sense.

I have done extensive interviews with panhandlers, and work with social workers and activists on a reguar basis. Although some panhandlers may use money for drugs, a large majority use panhandling money for food or shelter. The shelter waiting lists are months long, so you can't blame anyone for trying to get hotel money. As far as that situation goes, if you are intoxicated, it is even MORE dangerous to sleep on the are more likely to develop hypothermia or by assaulted.

What needs to be done is that classist, corrupt politicians should not be in power.

LOL, you college children (of any age) are so adorable! Was I ever that young and naive? And to think, before I grew up, when I was still at Umass, I might have heard you say that and replied, "yeah!" Well, Freshmen year anyway.

Um, ok, so if they are victims of this evil evil society of ours, how come we have all these illegal aliens coming in to do the jobs "Americans won't do?" You can't tell me these people are victims of circumstance on one hand while all these aliens are flooding in here to fill job vacancies on the other.

These things which are obvious to me will become clear to you once you grow up and leave Amherst MA

Under the new obam administration the term "Panhandler" will no longer be acceptable.
A kinder and gentler term must be used. The reason they are in this predictament is because of
"Bush". Before "Bush we had no "P.H.ers" and with the new obama regime we will have an end to "P.H.ers" in the good old USofA. Plus we will
subsidized all Panhandlers making less than 250,000 dollars a year. Any "" making more
than 250,000 ayear will get no help. Now that "Bush" and his gang are gone there will be
no more Panhandling in Northhamp. nor will that
dreaded word ever be uttered again.

I remeber walking downtown hamp when I was a teen and a guy and woman approched me. They straight up told me they wanted some change in an attempt to collect enough to get a fix of heroin. That was 18 years ago, and now they take issue with it. No wonder why I stay in Georgia. Man, coming home for Christmas is going to be painful. Do they still allow religion in Northamapton or have the extremists done away with that also?
Professor: Word is out that when you come home for Christmas, you will be able to attend services beneath any tree found vacant and a special Druid Ceremony will be held at City Hall at Midnight.
It is requested that you dress appropriately with piercings of every bodily part and bells on your feet. Yes Old Hamp is not the place we grew up in and I for one "Can't Go Home Again" and what's more I don't want to.
