Togain entry into the area where they keep dogs, there is a gate and an employee there to check the paper from the office for admittance. If he had no paper the man guard must have let him in. I have been there many times recently and I would say to keep that gate fence locked until the patron showed the paperwork.
I must add that the animal shelter employees are first class or at least they were to me.

I'm not taking sides on this but how exactly would most people show proof of ownership? I have 3 dogs and I don't have any way to prove they are mine (besides pics on my computer).

You mean that you have never taken your dogs to the Vets to have their Rabies Shots? They usually require the name of the person that owns them.

My vet gives me a rabies certificate, has my name & address on it and a tag. Wonder if this dog has had its shots?

I hope they find the guy and bring the dog back. I pray he is not using the dog for fighting or other harmful things.

So he saved a dog from being put down and it was most likely his or it would have been barking and might have attacked the man.

I just don't know what to make of all this. I would never think to carry proof that I own an animal and I have 4 cats. Pics are all over my computer.

And if I found one of my feline children at the pound, I would be horrified because I don't know which ones hold animals and which ones go ahead and kill them.

I think the animal control people need to do a better job in informing the public about what type of information they need to bring when people are trying to find a loved animal. I've never been to your facility, but I would hope there would have been some communication between the dog owner and the facility before he arrived to let him know to bring documentation. And, does a picture really work? A lot of animals look alike. My cats are indoors so I don't keep their rabies tag on them.

If I needed to find my animal, I don't know that I would think to call my vet. And if I did, what good would it do? There are other cats which look like mine. The only way you can really tell is if an animal responds - and then that's not 100% accurate. My neighbor's cat comes to me, but she's not mine.

I think I'm with the dog owner on this one.

Well I can not say that I blame him for trying to keep his animal.I have pit bulls and we know what happens to them. I do not understand, they know they going to put the dog down...just let the man take it home. It is that or death. It sounds REALLY inhuman if you ask me.

Not all people use dogs for fighting..If that man went thourgh all that trouble do you think he would hurt the dog? I don't...people who fight dogs DO NOT put money and time into them unless it for fighting purposes...and if they do lose a dog so what they have many many more...They would not go to a GOVERMENT building to get the dog back!!

What a great story, Im glad the guy adopted that poor dog, even if it was by force. The employee is just mad because he was man handled. He needs to hit the weights, and bulk up a bit or someone is going to adopt another dog by force when he's working.

If the shelter euthanizes THOUSANDS (literally, look it up in public records) of dogs in ONE year, then why CAN'T they let this guy take his dog without proof? Do you really think a bunch of people are after free dogs this way when you can get one on Craigslist? This is the same jackass-run shelter that doesn't lower the number of dogs they house by working with breed-specific rescues like normal shelters that don't want to destroy animals do! It seems by definition, our county shelter is a hoarder of animals.
