I have a close friend, a former DARE officer, who said it was a complete waste of his time. Unfortunately, more and more- not less and less- teenagers are experimenting with drugs. Doesn't that tell you something? It's time to try something different.

I just want to say to Officer Barnett--- kudos!!! on restarting the DARE classes in Carrizozo. He is a great guy who totally believes in the program. And Carrizozos' gain is Capitans' loss.

Here's a program idea for parents: how about a R.A.C.E.(Raise A Child Education)? I'm a firm believer that 90%+ of a child's decisions rather wrong, right, good, or bad is instilled by the parents and how they were or weren't raised. The D.A.R.E. progam is unsuccessful because the child's decision is already made up whether he/she is going to experiment/use drugs before they step foot in a D.A.R.E. class.

DARE has a mixed-bag analysis in its run. I believe times have changed with the DARE curricula not changing (significantly enough) with it.

The program is popular with kids themselves, however many educators will doubt its impact.

Two Dubz is right on the money with this one -- our schools as institutions have no longer focused on education. They are now responsible for parenting, reproductive issues, security (like "Lock down" training), "Multicultural" education curricula, ADA compliance, feeding children, providing medical attention, counseling, transportation to/from, entertaining, babysitting/childcare beyond school hours, test-taking instruction (let us not forget "No Child Left Behind -- from a former President who couln't speak or spell!)...It goes on and on -- Ad Nauseum. With all that said, how do we as a society justify the gluttonous amounts of taxpayer monies which are shipped into the public education system by the super-tanker load? The "One-room Schoolhouse" did it better 100 years ago.

A parting thought -- What about Reading, Writing and arithmetic?

I do not blame educators, they have simply adapted to the changing environment, much of which has been imposed on them by idiot big-city politicians who seem to think we need to be a socialist dicatatorship under the guise of the "Progressive" movement. Children are the responsibility of their parents and families FIRST, communities SECOND. I am sick of being expected to work harder and pay more taxes to see them squandered on wefare cases and irresponsible parents who consider vehicle maintenance and beer more important than their duties to their progeny.

No small wonder that kids can tell you what do do incase of an active shooter on campus and about free breakfast & lunch. They, to significant degree, cannot read effectively, comprehend and balance a checkbook.

Kudos to the percentage of our kids who navigate this minefield and despite the deck being stacked against them, go on to higher education and other ultimately successful ventures.

How did we get here?
