Unfortunately the writer of this editorial is ignorant of upcoming changes in the NC educational system. There is legislation, approved by the governor that will make it harder to get a HS diploma. Every graduate will have to have geometry and algebra II along with 2 years of a foreign language. Also, there are going to be great cuts in the tech and trade classes.
High school is going to be only for those who are going to college. While this is a great idea, it is highly unrealistic. We still need skilled laborors, such as automechanics, welders, and masons. Students used to be able to graduate with these skills, and now they only get an introductory course in these skills if any. These changes will increase the drop-out rate.
If you don't want the drop out rate to increase, talk to your local state lawmakers, and get this idea changed.

I think changes to make high school for the only
college students, will not be the best coarse to follow, In every day life and any job, education is important to move up in any job. I think all children should be taught high school is very
important and should be 4 years of learning and
doing the very best one can, weather he is planning on a college degree or not.
It worries me to think our educators don't encourage the most education for all.
