A St. Simons Island man shot and killed by a Glynn County police officer during a standoff Thursday night was armed with a high-powered rifle and other weapons, had a history of confrontations with authorities and had prescription drugs for bi-polar disorder.

"We found him in the front bedroom lying partially on the bed near the rifle, which was a fully loaded Winchester .300 Magnum hunting rifle," Doering said. "One bullet from that rifle would have gone straight through two of my officers each wearing bulletproof vests."
