There was NEVER a gnats ass chance that St. Marys would become Georgia's 3rd deep water port....cargo ship, barge, jon boat or otherwise. Case closed.

They tossed around the idea back in the '70s with the old ammunition terminal, but the DOD decided to use it for something else.

Something to keep in mind. The new Post-Panamax ships are much larger, carry a lot more cargo, therefore the total number of ports is expected to decline. That's why everyone is so desperate to expand Savannah. If they don't, it won't survive. The article kinda hinted that, but didn't come right out and say it.

Excellent summary. Unfortunantely, Savannah will not survive as a port either. It is well known at the top of government that only one port will survive beyond the end of 2012. By the end of Obama's second term Washington, D.C. will be the only port left in the United States. The trend is centralization, and the federal government intends to export and import all goods through the port of Washington, D.C. On good authority, the reason given is so a new govenment agency will have total control on what enters and leaves the United States. The new federal agency will be called the"Export-Import Department and it will be formed March 1,2013. The Czar has already been selected and he is a Moslem from a middle eastern country. The master plan includes a provision for shuting down St Marys until the moral improves.

knows for sure.......you may be very right about it not survivng as a port......but not for what you mentioned. In 1958 , due to an air collision,a H. bomb was dropped in this area. If they dreg just deep enough we won't be here either. This was a well docummented and searched for bomb. Never recovered.
