Johnson: Gallipolis, Gallia Co. need a 'win'

Apr 6, 2011 Full story: Daily Sentinel 16

"We need a win. We need something for the city of Gallipolis, not just the city of Gallipolis but the county at large, and we want the community's help in deciding what that is," Gallipolis City Commissioner Matt Johnson said in regard to future city growth during a regular meeting of the city commission on Tuesday.

This city has a fabulous resource which is the river and park. This area is sadly underutilized. We need to utilize our riverfront much like Pomeroy. We need to have music festivals, cultural activities, art shows, outdoor theater and continue the farmers market. At least 3 seasons of the year, there should be something happening at the park.

We have the "new"; two groups of commissioners committed to working together for Gallia Co.

Now they really need some support from the residents; we have to stop complaining & start contributing. I too want my kids to stay here.

I hope that u r right but,old habits die hard.I personally would volunteer my time for the cause.
He is talking about the county and their connections, ppl in the county have been trying for things like this and keep hitting brick walls.
Someone that Johnson needs to talk to is Mr.Brown in the county ,He would have great input!!!!

I'd be more than willing to be supportive if it's something that the masses of gallia county can enjoy and not just a select few. Build it and they will come.....

They won't come just because they have highway access....they have to have a reason to stop, that's what I meant by build it and they will come. Build a reason to stop.(festivals, fairs, art shows, etc...)

Along with this plan good restaurants are a must. I have also always thought an outlet mall, like Jeffersonville, would be a very good plus for our area. Our location is ideal and it is being wasted. I am glad to see some enthusiasm for building a future here at home.

That would be an idea as far as having a domino effect for the cash flow, but ppl in this area wont see it that way. The general feeling is that counsel want to work with what is here. But I suppose any step in that direction is a start.

Matt is correct but the powers that be in Gallia Co. don't want want and won't let new business into the county...that has always been the problem here. All the people do in Gallipolis is tear down and don't build back. Look at the 300 block of Second, Court Street, and many other places in town. Look how long it took to even get a Walmart and now that we have it that is the only place to shop. I miss the stores downtown and not having more that one grocery store in Gallipolis. We don't even have a movie anymore is it any wonder kids leave here???

River taxis would be nice. You could get to Pomeroy lickity split and not have to worry about idiot drivers and deer.

No one is going to want to establish new businesses to get robbed. Gallipolis needs to clean up it's drug issue first. I hate it that I can't bring my family back there and be at peace with my decision. I would be too worried about some druggie needing a fix would break in. Let's be honest with ourselves, if you had a small buisness would you start up in a county full of drug users and sellers?
