Being in education for so many years, it is amazing how many children are classified as special ed. From resourse rooms to closed classrooms, it is astounding. Why don't we go back to the core subject matter and teach our children how we were taught? If someone is in need of extra reading or math help, have a homework room. But why must everyone have to be classified. I'll tell you why. If a student is classified, they will not only have special accomodations to get through high school when other kids have to earn it, they will also have more benefits if they go to college or trade schools. VESID is a big resource for this. What about the kids that are making it through? I think that the districts are making it easier for certain kids to get free help.....

If anyone on this site should be advocating form Special Ed srvices, it should be you. From what you've told us about yourself, perhaps if you'd received Special Ed services you'd be able to spell better and perhaps would then be in a better place (and not quite so bitter) in life. I don't mean this as an insult, but you have said you have a severe hearing disability that limits your ability to spell (I don't understand how hearing efect spelling, but I'm not a specialist). This disability may be part of the reason you turned to drink: to medicate away the insults that must have been thrown your way as a child and to avoid confronting the reality of your disability.

Here's all you need to know about education in NYS.

NYS ranks #1 of money spent per pupil

and ranks #18 on graduation rate and student performance.

This state is a joke.

I really don't mean my comment as an insult. xdrunk has said he has a serious hearing loss that effects his spelling ability. What could he be doing if he'd had access to the services tht are available now? He, of any of us on this blog, shuld be advocating for more and more effective ser4vices, not demeaning them. I am not trying to pick on him, just pointing out why we have the services we do now.

You're welcome xdrunk, and thank you for undeerstanding what I was trying to say. And I completely argee with OUA812. The Special Ed teachers I know are generally extraordinary people with huge amounts of dedication. Why else would anyone chose to take such a hard and generally thankless job? Certainly not because it's easy, because it certainly isn't.
