Full story: Asheville Citizen-Times

It's a great disappointment that members of the N.C. Senate Commerce Commit-tee bowed to powerful lobbying groups and killed a bottle deposit bill for this legislative session.

Many years ago, when I served on a county commission (in another state) which looked at deposit legislation, we found that the containers cost several times what the contents cost. So there's much beverage container manufacturing money to oppose a bottle bill. Find out who funds the opposition in NC, and I believe you will find bottle and can manufacturers.

Another socialist idea that would create more government bureaucracies. I can't believe the democrats opposed it. Of course, any lobbyist will tell you that democrats are the best politicians that money can buy.

I think Republicans should come out strong in support of this bottle deposit legislation. It's not socialism, it is being a good steward of the land.

I was on a business trip to Waterloo, IA, last year and it amazed me at how many high school and college aged kids were bringing bottles and cans back to WalMart for recycling and getting their deposit back. I asked one young lady about their activities and she said that WalMart had recycling machines in their lobby and after putting in your bottles and cans to be crushed, a receipt was printed out that could be taken in the store and either cashed or used to pay for merchandise. She said that some of the kids did it just for the extra spending money and had set up recycling trash cans at local businesses to catch the extra cans and bottles. It seemed to work okay there. As 'green' as NC, and especially Asheville, claims to be, why not be a leader on this issue instead of a reluctant follower?

Doug Berger tends to put things forth that are not well thought out. He did not think of the amount of trash a young family would have to store in their car while vacationing in NC. He did not think of the elderly, whose income is limited and who may not have space in their small home/apartment or have the transportation to return the containers. He did not think of the additional carbon footprint of this program. He did not think of the danger people will be in while collecting containers on the side of major highways; I would not like to be the sponsor of a piece of legislation that causes someone to be injured or killed. He did not think of the actual cost of the additional agencies needed to monitor and administer this program. HE DID THINK OF THE ADDITIONAL TAX REVENUE THE STATE WOULD HAVE TO SPEND. Because of Doug Berger's documented socialist background, he believes government rules and regulations are always the best way to determine how things should be done. May Berger's Bottle Bill RIP!

"Reuse of glass containers is preferable to recycling according to the waste hierarchy. Refillable bottles are used extensively in many European countries, Canada and until relatively recently, in the United States. In Denmark 98% of bottles are refillable and 98% of those are returned by consumers.[2] A similarly high number is reported in Canada.[3] These systems are typically supported by container deposit laws and other regulations. In some developing nations like India and Brazil, the cost of new bottles often forces manufacturers to collect and refill old glass bottles for selling carbonated and other drinks."

Beats me what this has to do with politics.

Oh I know "retiredlawman", and of course, he is not. But his brother in law works for Coke in A-ville, is a big wig, and he is wants to get in on the butt kissing. He laughs about it over at the Waffle House.

We all know a bottle bill would be good for the State. We also all know that the bottlers oppose it. There is just not enough public outcry to make it happen.
