Even better than recycling glass beverage containers is re-using them! But the folks who manufacture throw-away containers want you to throw them away, or perhaps recycle them, so that the manufacturers can keep on making new bottles. Thus the manufacturers lobby with big bucks to defeat any bottle legislation. Follow the money.

Having read the 'bottle bill' written by state Senator Doug Berger (D!-Franklin), I find there are several errors and a potential unfair burden on our most vulnerable citizens: our senior citizens and low income families.
Senator Doug Berger wants to hammer us over the head with a 10 cent per container tax if our recycling habits do not fit his expectations. As a Progressive (read Socialist) Democrat, Senator Doug Berger put forth this bill in keeping with his agenda for more government involvement and less personal agency. Senator Doug Berger relishes more bureaucracy and wresting individual decisions from us. As to the unfair burden, many seniors and lower income families will not be aware of the 10 cent tax or have the needed storage space and/or transportation to take the bag of containers to a remote redemption center. And people who store these taxed containers may also have more rodents and insects visiting their container bag. And where does the 10 cent per container tax go when it is not claimed? The unclaimed tax money goes into the general fund where it can be spent on non-environmental projects. Tell your representative that this 'bottle bill' is bad law and to vote against it. |

I think it is only fair that the public know that Mr. Stires is not an unbiased party where Senator Berger is concerned. Mr. Stires was the GOP opponent of Senator Berger in the race for the State Senate. To fully access Mr. Stire's philosophy, the following might be helpful. This was taken from the August 20, 2007 minutes from the Franklin Board of Commissioner's Meeting.
Chuck Stires, 151 Rockinghorse Lane, Youngsville  Mr. Stires addressed the Board about the need for responsible spending by our state legislature and spoke against the practice of “reaching into our taxpayers’ pockets” to pay for needs like schools. He also spoke unfavorably about the state’s effort to bring about Medicaid relief. 3. LEGISLATIVE UPDATE North Carolina Senator Doug Berger was in attendance to update the Board on recent legislative action. He said the last session reflected a “banner year” for North Carolina counties and said a major accomplishment was permanent Medicaid relief. Other efforts he said were positive by the General Assembly included:  A balanced budget Increased funding in the rainy day fund Salary increases for teachers and state employees Improvements in healthcare for children whose family earns less what is considered the poverty level Mental health coverage Earned income tax credit High risk insurance pool Tax cuts for small businesses Senator Berger also mentioned that the County may soon have to reconsider its APSO (Adequate Public Schools Ordinance). He said the Senate has voted to make the ASPO plan illegal. The House of Representatives is now expected to deliberate the issue. Commissioners questioned Senator Berger about other bills passed by the General Assembly and asked for updates on mental health reform and the effects of the plan to provide Medicaid relief. If the majority of NC's see the need for a common sense approach to our mounting landfill woes, why is Mr. Stires on the wrong side of the public will. Surely, any person truly invested in the market system sees the economic merit in establishing a market for reusable and unused bottles. This is a bill whose time has come.(And I bet there will be a lot of happy kids picking up those bottles for some extra movie money.) |

i NOTED IN TODAYS GREENSBORO RECORD WHERE SEN.Doug Berger, D-Franklin.. IS INTRODUCING A BILL AGAINST CROSS BURNING HANG ROPE SYMBOLS AND OTHER ITEMS THAT OFFEND BLACKS. WHEN I HEARD OF THE IMUS AFFAIR ABOUT CALLING THE BLACK PLAYERS ON A BASKETBALL TEAM CALLED WHAT EVER HE SAID. THE COACH OF THE TEAM STATED THIS WOULD CAUSE THE PLAYERS OF THE TEAM ERECOVERVABLE DAMAGE FOR THE REST OF THERE LIVES. I THOUGHT TO MYSELF HOW COULD A COMMENT FROM A PERSON LIKE THIS WHO IS PAID MILLIONS AND BLABBERS ON AND ON EVERY DAY ABOUT NOTHING IMPORTANT DEVISTATE SOMEONES LIFE. I DO NOT BELIVE THESE GIRLS THINK ANY THING ABOUT IT ANYMORE AND ARE GOING ON WITH THERE LIVES.SO MY POINT IS IF YOU STOP EVERYTHING THAT BLACKS DO NOT LIKE WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO STOP ALL THINGS THAT WHITES DO NOT LIKE. BLACK RAP MUSIC THAT CONDONES RAPE , MURDER, SHOOTING COPS AND A LOT MORE.
