Its about time to start charging the parents of school age children for their education. At the very least there should be some base precentge of the cost per year that is directly charged to the parents. Forcing property owners to pay for childrens education is just flat out wrong..especially the ones that have no children...fair is fair and the system sucks now.

What a shock. A Politician doesn't like it when someone talks about cutting taxes or changing them. I never met a Politician that didn't like raising them though.

Problem is the property taxes have not increased (thank goodness)as much as the costs to educate children. The schools now rely on SPLOSTs instead of bonds to pay some of the costs related to education. So as it is right now we pay a sales tax and a property tax. To eliminate the property tax the sales tax would need to increase and the state would need to have a reserve fund ("savings account")of some type to draw from in poor economic periods. I do not see the government saving anything. They are like most Georgians living pay check to paycheck.

Everyone would still be paying for the education of the children through increased sales tax. But I like the idea. It will force school districts to better plan and budget. I have never thought property tax was fair.

We cannot keep funding schools and other operations with a property tax system hundreds of years old. We need simpler and fairer taxes, and this one that Speaker Richardson proposes is just that. Tax spending with a sales tax and eliminate the unfair and excessive property taxes. Property taxes are a substantial burden to every homeonwer in Georgia and every car owner.

I'm glad to see someone is thinking about new and better ways to do things. It's time to make changes like this to move Georgia forward. Indeed, the schools will be better off without having to rely on the old property tax system which is capped by the millage rate anyway. If they are already collecting sales tax to fund projects, this next step makes good sense. Let's have progress in Georiga and not just stick with the old status quo.

Cost to educate a child?

Look at the salaries of some of the school 'Administrators', they make more than the United States President! The bad thing is that Georgias' schools are ranked near the bottom of the fifty states.

Cut funding until School Boards can explain the high salaries and poor rankings.

I can tell you these fantastic salaries do not reach down to the class room teacher. Let's make sure we do not forget that.

Too much money going to the chiefs and not enough to the indians?
