I realize that pro-ration has strapped our school's budgets, but how much tax burden can we take on? Already our Government has spent us into financial disaster, and no relief is in sight for decades. The Fed has already printed so much fiat money, that our GNP cannot support it. A government cannot spend itself out of debt - that is proven fact. Those governments that have tried to do this have collapsed financially, even though they still exist. They experience rapid and destructive runaway inflation, and we are starting to see this happen in America today - right now. If you have been shopping at the grocery store over the last six months, you KNOW the price increases on everything on the shelves. And, this weeks regular prices are next weeks "sale" prices. Product package sizes are reduced in size to hide price increases. Seeing the "new" 7.5 ounce soda cans at the same price of the old 12 ounce prices? There are many products that have downsized their products just to keep from charging more for the older/larger sizes. And of course, other products are costing more, and made of much more inferior materials because they cannot "downsize" clothing, appliances, cars, electronics we use everyday.
So now our town wants to tax us more on the downsized product in the stores? How about Tallassee running on the revenue that it has now, instead of increasing the taxes it charges. We aren't getting pay raises to deflect the increases in the cost of living, so we live on less - hoping this trend will settle of its own accord. BUT, the cost of living has never grown less, at least in my 54 odd years of memory.
Tax increases always damage the economy, and we are at the point that anything that does damage to us financially causes us to spend less because the money is just not there anymore. A 1% tax increase is a useless action, as it causes us to spend less, which causes less tax revenue. When will our town read the history of finance? Lowering taxes always causes tax revenue to increase. That is a fact that every business major accepts as a basic rule. The new tax increase will come around and bite the town in the butt - guaranteed. THEN, what will they do?
