Eau Claire County DA clears officers in shooting of gunman

Eau Claire County sheriff's deputies faced "the imminent threat of deadly force" and were justified when they shot a gun-wielding man during a domestic dispute earlier this month, District Attorney Rich White says.

These cops shot this guy while they were in a armored van. They were target practicing. They was no danger of any kind. This was police murder. The facts are the facts. I've been very critical of police shootings on these forums (Fong Lee, the guy in Kasota, et al) and, admittedly, I don't know enough about this shooting to form an opinion as to whether it was justified. However, the contention that an officer should "shoot to disarm" is absurd. It puts everyone at risk. Gunfights are not the precision exercises you'd like them to be. Wounding someone does not necessarily incapacitate them. Once it has been determined that the trigger must be pulled, the only sensible action is to shoot to kill.

In the real world, with real people and real guns, one shot to disarm is impossible, or close enough to make it very dangerous to try.
I challenge you to stand up to someone holding a gun on you and shoot them once to disarm them.

Also, the physical size of a person has absolutely nothing to do with how a person preforms under stress. A "John Wayne" sized officer might, or might not have behaved differently.
Personal experience in military combat situations show, it's usually the smaller guys who preform the best.
Big guys, are just big targets.

There is no such things as 'shoot to wound'. As others have said, one the decision that deadly force is need is made, the officers are trained to shoot into the high body mass with an intent to immediately incapacitate or kill. There is no middle ground, because there can't be. Handguns are not accurate enough to shoot a gun out of someone's hand, especially in quick-fire situation.
