Perhaps, instead of expanding, or continuing with "fixed wing' assets, we should be utilizing the National Guard, or their own Heavy Lift Rotary, for Water Drops, Crew and Supplies.
We remember when Lowell V. "Lody" Smith ran NDF as its Forester- This Was a Forester!
He utilized the National Guard, and Heavy use of NDF Fire Crews.
But Alas, with the ever changing times, and the "re-inventing of government" philosophies running amok, we were encumbered with those who wanted only to fulfill their egos with "innovative" measures, and acsension to coveted positions.
Our Best State Forester -Ever- retired, and the feeding frenzie began! We lost many of the "Old Guard" Division of Foirestry personnel, who really gave a damn about the organization; but most of all, They Cared about the People and their properties.
These Crew Bosses and their Crews, the Good Leadership; it's all gone now-as well, along with their expertise/experiences...they knew how to fight a wildland or forest the trenches!
Now, we have the Peter Principle types that are out there...ya know, promote those to the highest level of incompetency, and ya get the stark results!
Get rid of all of this P.C. garbage of fighting fires, the piecemeal fracturing of NDF, by relegating to "Protection Districts", and empasis on "Aviation assets"...get your Butts on the damn line where ya belong, and stop trying to be "Hollywood Firefighters" doesn't work, there is only so much Hairspray and Mustache Wax available!
Its time that we Review this organization of Nevada Division of Forestry, and question whether or not it is being operated in a manner that reflects its mission and supposed goals.
I have no problem providing for the Conservation Camps and the Conservation/Fire Crews assigned therein....But, I would question the Now, Purpose of NDF Fire Stations (operating either as NDF or "Protection Districts", and Aviation Units of Fixed Wing units.
We should direct our tax dollars at the Conservation Camps, the maintenance of a State Forester and his/her Assistant-and, CAN THE REST!

How about instead of spending all this money in suppression we actually start spending money to negate the problem in the first place?? We need to spend money to thin the forests PROPERLY!!! EVERY TIME the Forest Service puts out a timber sale or a salvage sale it ends up in court because some "environmentalist" group sues them which leaves TONS of fuels in the forest to burn and make these MASSIVE wildfires, and the salvage timber sits there and rots on the stump.
