Passage of this law could potentially attract restaurants to unincorporated county areas, without them needing to seek annexation by the city.

However, by having a special election in September instead of putting this on the November ballot with the SPLOST will cost the taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars that we shouldn't be incurring.

Until this passes, I think Douglasville's chances of attracting the better restaurants is very slim.

Douglasville already permits Sunday sales by the drink.
This only impacts the County outside the City limits which does not.

I don't know what the impact of this would be. It would slow the annexation of land, but would it stop the annexation?

I'll drink to that.

Never could figure out why they'd ban sales on that particular day...

Used to be that way up north too. The Sabath was for everyone at one time.

Yep, then we put the churches in their place. When I was a kid, no stores were'nt open on Sundays. My Mom always had to go to Krogers on Saturday.

This referendum does not include package stores - those would still not be allowed outside of the city limits.
So like we recently had, annexations would still go on for that purpose.
Same for zoning changes.

In general I agree with you, Lew. But it occurs to me,you don't like religion, or is it churches you don't like. Either way, why?

Never mind, Lew. I think I found the reason on another thread (30M people claim no religion). You equate religion with racism.

Tell you what, I won't tell all those black churches if you won't. Deal?

It's a shame that one group of people can tell other people (business owners) when and how to run their business. Religion should stay out of it and, stay out of schools and gov. Religion is between YOU and YOUR GOD. Don't push YOUR religion on me.

I'm confused, don't we have separation between church and state? And besides, Jesus was a huge wine drinker, right?

He made it for crying out loud! These people want to push their own ideas of what is right and wrong no matter what the Bible says. Show me a verse that says drinking is wrong and I'll kiss your ass! It only says not to be taken with strong drink. Alcoholism is wrong, not drinking. A little wine is good for the stomach......and yes I am a Christian. But I follow Jesus, not mans dogma.

This country (and i know several of you will deny what I say) was founded by people of the Christian faith. You can't change that and that is why we have the laws we do. We also have laws protecting Churches by not having liquor or beer stores near Churches. I never understood that law until I had some problems with a convenience store selling beer near a place near and dear to my heart. After the store opened, I had problems with trespassers drinking and trashing my property. This property was a place for religious services, but not a Church, and was therefor, not protected. This caused a lot of heart ache for many people.

For you atheists, we love our religion and it's very much a part of our existence. Last time I checked, we have freedom of religion in this country. If you don't like it, then leave us alone. OK?

So why again can I not buy beer from Publix on a Sunday? You argument makes no sense. This country may have been founded on Christian principles (which is arguable) but it was also founded on the idea that we are NOT a theocracy. There is NO legitimate reason for not selling alcohol on a Sunday unless Christianity is factored in.

And that's just wrong.

I disagree. I would say that none of us is perfect. Yup, we are born that way. But the idea of being saddled with sin at birth is repellent to me. Shoot, at least I wait until my kids do something bad before grounding them. LOL

Tell your God I said thanks, if you should ever see him or her.
