Community rejects rezoning

There are 1 comment on the Myrtle Beach Online story from Jun 15, 2007, titled Community rejects rezoning. In it, Myrtle Beach Online reports that:

“We want to protect our way of life in the Plantersville community”

'How many people here want to see development come to Plantersville?' asked Smith Ragsdale, a member of the Plantersville Community Association.

Not one person raised his or her hand.

More than 100 residents crammed into the Plantersville Community Center and overflowed into the hallway Monday night to listen to presentations about zoning from the Coastal Conservation League and the Plantersville Community Association.

Zoning became a hot-button issue in Plantersville after Georgetown County Council considered passing an ordinance to designate 39,000 acres of property around the Plantersville area as forest agriculture. Read more

My family is from Plantersville and many of them still reside there today. Many of the people there own their land and pass it on to future generations in effort to keep in the family. This rezoning effort will rip my family's land right from under them. One home per acre?? Are you serious? Who are you kidding? Government knows that the people of Plantersville have much more than that per family and they'll do anything to futher isolate us in a smaller area. They use promises of faster emergency assistance and better sewer systems as a way to lure the people of Plantersville to give up their land so they can take over Plantersville and make it a ore "developed" area. The intelligence of the people of Plantersville is greatly under estimated. We understand what you (the government) are trying to do to us! I still visit Plantersville to see my family. My roots are there. My heritage is there. My parents, aunts, and uncles will retire there. And will continue to LIVE there. We might be growing at a slower pace than you like, but you'll just have to deal with it.
