The conservatives criticize liberals for tax and spend, but cheer for a spay and neuter program. Fight over funding for a lifesaving service but embrace a program that should be privately funded. Let us pat ourselves on the back after all, we are conservatives. Anyone need some money, just stop by the cc and get some of the big severance money. Hell no, we are not going to put any money back for a rainy day. We can always raise more from the working people. Yes, we need a spay and neuter program but not for animals. By the way, I am animal lover and I pay taxes on my pets and pay for their neutering and other healthcare needs.

I take it you are someone involved with the DCAA that resents anyone getting county money except for the 600,000 in salaries enjoyed by the "life saving service" you refer to.... and one coming from our tax money. Heck ...750 bucks to spay and neuter is insignificant compared to the chunk of the county budget your entity demands of us.... an entity that SHOULD have been left as a private entity not being instead the one and only rural county government paid ems in the state!(and one our county can ill afford)

WRONG-- I actually disapprove of the way that money has been spent. I am tired of this big county government that has been created over the last few years. Have you not noticed the delingent list growing every year in the newspaper. The only one benefiting from that is the newspaper. Conservative county--yea right.

fed up and belly ache -- BOTH of you are right --- BUT NEITHER of you are taking into consideration that $750 wouldn't cover the cost of the pick up and boarding of the unwanted puppies that result from NOT spaying the animals ---

So it is a case of pay me now (give the spay and neuter and program the $$$$ they need) or paying increased rates to the animal control officer and for housing the additional unwanted animals.

I'm usually not a big fan of government money being spent on things like spay and neuter programs.
That being said. I have to agree with Citizen X. This may be a case where spending a little money now might wind up saving a lot of money in the long run.

The big question. Should any of this be a function of government?
If people cannot afford to have their pet neutered, it is doubtful they will be able to afford other vet costs. We have people really struggling to make ends meet. We have children that are not getting the health care they need but we take money from their family and spay animals. Jerry will be gone in a few months and it would be nice if Butch would start thinking for himself. We cannot afford every funding request that comes the pike? I realize this is just my opinion but I can tell that a lot of people agree with me.

in my opinion it won't cost the county much more.
we can use the dcaa employees that are between runs or transports to do pedicures.
and do transport and aftercare to the neuterees with their medical knowledge
my tax money is paying them to sit around, or nap in new mattresses in a luxourious building that was paid for with my tax money

You people do not have time to make a difference in the county nor in anyones life for the better of all because you are to busy talking about everyone else who does. Some people just have to much time on their hands, try volunteering in the community, you will both feel better.

Why not see if they could turn the new welfare office into something more useful like a spa instead of keeping it to help those who won't (notice I said won't)help themselves?

Please keep in mind that spaying and neutering animals isn't just for the pet owner. I personally have had 14 (yes 14) cats and 2 dogs dropped off at my house since last spring. I am a taxpayer and appreciate the fact that some of my tax dollars can prevent this problem. Without spay and neuter perhaps I would have had to deal with 50 cats, none of my choosing. Dog catcher takes the dogs and I get stuck with the cats.

Same here. Lots of cats & dogs showing up. Nothing I can do about the cats. We've taken several cats to our vet to get spayed but can't afford to do all of them! We can't even get close enough to some of the cats to catch them.

Why don't you use the spay and neuter program? It is open to everyone and cats are only$37 females and $22 for males

On the subject of feral cats. They kill unbeliveably large numbers of small animals and birds. They have no place in the wild and if not wanted should be destroyed.
I know some will find the idea harsh but sometimes hard things need to be done.
If you doubt the damage they do the studies can easily be found on the web.

Nature has a way of taking care of business as the cats eat smaller pray so to does the coyote and other animals. I do agree cats breed alot faster, finding a real solution to the problem would be the key and if you can't kill them ( I totally disagree with this method)spaying and neuterig is the next best step and through other predator animals and natural cat disease the population is inevitably going to drop. Leave one cat undone it is a guarantee that you will have 60 by the end of the year. No doubt all unwanted animals/people cause damage to society, it is the humans who need to take responsiabilty and clean up their mess. Some humans can kill/destroy the unwanted, but others can not spaying /neutering is their other alternative. Good luck with what ever situation you find yourslf in.

Because we have a vet that see's all of our animals. Including our livestock. All of our animal's records are with this same vet. We like him! His prices are reasonable, so we've taken strays to him also.
