Rude Attitude from a business owner

I am a semi local to Dare County and happened to be south of Oregon Inlet where I reside part of the week during the summers. I ate at a local establishment and because of it being crowed parked at a close business next door. As I returned to my vehicle, I found my kids being confronted by the property owner and being cursed at. When I approached, I was cursed out also and fussed out for parking there. I promptly apologized and explained that the parking lot was crowed and was cut off with the statement "I dont give a damn about the people that run that place, you cant park here"
I again apologized and was told a tow truck had been called. I politely told the owner again i was sorry, and said it would not happen again.
The next morning I found that my vehicle had been "KEYED" leaving about a 4 ft long deep gouge in the paint.
As you can imagine, it did not leave a good taste in my mouth about that owner and their business. If this is how they treat native North Carolinians, how in the world to they expect tourists to stop there.
There were no signs posted where I was parked and was only there for about 45 minutes while the business was not open,,,,
What a world and friendly people,,, fortunately I know all the folks in Dare Co are not that way but imagine had it been tourist?
Business owners take note, you are a public vehicular access,,,not private property, as long as someone does no damage it should not matter unless they are blocking access during business hrs, I am not mentioning the business name nor the owners out of courtesy and respect, even though I did not recieve likewise.

When I read this, I felt like I knew the exact business you were writing about. Unfortunately, that business owner has been through alot with neighbors trying to claim their land. I live on Hatteras Island, and not too far from that store, and I've talked with them on several occasions about their problem. They are forced to aggressively defend their territory. They do have signs posted, and have for two years, and the parked cars eventually block them. I doubt they keyed your vehicle, that would be so out of character of them, because they are very home-body oriented, work hard, are respectful citizens, and have only been trying to protect their rights to their own land. Sounds crazy, but if you look at our states laws on Adverse Possession you'd understand. And yes it does happen in Dare County, NC and other states. I'm sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience, I hope you find peace, with your anger.

I completely agree that businesses aren't always public. You see signs all the time saying "parking for customers only", which is understandable, but cursing at kids!?!? that's uncalled for, even if the business owner has had trouble with people. We are a tourist place, like it or not, and should be careful about how we treat our guests. The man said he explained his reasoning and appologized. That should have been enough, considering he was a tourist just trying to get some dinner and didn't realize the severity of what he had done!
On the local's side of it though, tourists also need to understand that we deal with alot of different kinds of people; good people, generous people, along with people that have no idea where they are going and think every next turn is their turn, repeat visitors that think they know everything, consistant complainers, etc.... so it's only fair to ask the tourists to be understanding as well. Sometimes enough can be enough and we locals have to blow off some steam!Ü Please continue to visit our beautiful beaches and landscapes!
