Stunt pilot dies at Va. air show

Full story: Baltimore Sun

In past years, aerobatic flyer Nancy A. Lynn had wanted to perform at the Culpeper Air Fest in Virginia the loops, rolls and spins she had so perfected.

This is at least the fifth such airshow crash this year.

Condolences to the pilot, family and friends.

These shows should NEVER be held over residential areas because of the frequent accidents

What a shame. Also a shame that morons like Skylune insist upon posting on this site.

Oh. I guess the other crashes at airshows were just media fabrications. Thank you for your enlightenment.

Let me start off the airshows are not held over residential areas. The FAA has strict guidlines on crowd safety and it was proven by no spectators being injured. The pilots that fly in airshows are true professionals and treat it as just that, a profession. I have met Nancy Lynn and she died trying to share her love for aviation with the public that may never get to experience it, so please don't jump to conclusions and start making comments on a subject without reseaching it first. Take a look at how many airshows happen each year with no mishaps.

Dont worry airshowpilot, skyloon is full of bs as he shoots his mouth off in all of the forums. His comments are from a non pilot and non person. All airshow pilots take the risks for our benifit. We all enjoy there skills. I lost a friend in Spokane doing it some years ago, he was doing what he loved untill the end. And yes the FAA does a great job as no person has lost there life due to an airshow accident in the US. Pardon I mean spectator.

Microsoft is objecting to the airshow held in close proximity to its Washington State campus. A jet (not affiliated with the air show), crashed into a residential neighborhood earlier this year, igniting three homes.

Very simple to check by googling. Pilots do not want any accountability, and object to anyone who raises any criticisms of their taxpayer funded fun.

Pilots take accountability everytime they start the engine. The local airport funds the event to bring in the community and spark interest from both kids and adults by experiencing and seeing the miracle of flight first hand. Non of our local county airports are in residential areas, and each airport is a close community of pilots. Losing Nancy was a great loss to our family of pilots.

Have any of you read about the investigation taking place of the local VFD and the response time to the accident. That's something that Skylune should get fired up about... it'll be a better focus for his/her taxpayer concerns. And Mike in CA - are you trying to sell something, because your "IF" comments won't help her now. And regardless of the safety equip she may or may not have had, there's no guarantee that she would have "escaped".

I watched Nancy crash, and I watched her son and friends try to save her. I pray that you never have to experience such an event.

We had the pleasure of watching Nancy Lynn at an air show here in Ottawa, Ontatio, last summer. It is sad to learn that she is gone. It just confirms that old saying "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old-bold pilots". Farewell Nancy!!!

The taxpayer funded fun I am referring to is not the peanuts raised to have the local airshow. It is the massive taxpayer subsidies that build runways, buy equipment, land, etc. and that provide operating subsidies to thousands of small GA airports across the country. The 19.3 cents of avgas taxes paid per gallon generate peanuts: less than 5% of the Aviation Trust Fund annually.

GA receives a higher annual subsidy per passenger mile than Amtrak, everyone's favorite whipping board. And that is a documented fact. Details available at Bureau of Transportation Statistics, for those interested in reality.

I fly in the culpeper air show, as well as a number of others around the country. The only advice I can give here is to not let someone like this lune (or more accurately, idiot) pull you in. We fly old military aircraft that we spend 100's of hours and many thousands of dollars making sure we stay ahead of any potential problems at air shows, and elsewhere. I have said many times that the most dangerous part of my day is driving to and from the airport. That's where you see idiots like lune driving.

Culpeper is great. We all look forward to next year's event!
