Now that two children have been hit by cars the school is saying something must be done! Why didn't the school board insist on this before ? Wasn't safety a concern when they made Hille a junior high?

If they couldn't control traffic and assure safe crossings. Then they should have built on another site or not move all distribution 142 jr high to one building

Board members are people in the community but most do not have an education background. Ie: John the ad guy at a failing newspaper. Or Hank the warehouse worker now our mayor.
This a problem on every school board unqualified people making decisions

Also,When the speed limit is 35 everyone is going 40 and 45. The city should start there by lowering the speed limit. Cars fly down that street!

151st Street west of Central is a county road. The county would have to lower the speed limit.

Sorry to say that this is in fact true. In both these cases, I feel such compassion for the families of these kids, especially this recent one as it appears to be quite severe. However, I also feel great compassion for the poor drivers in these cases. To my understanding, this could have happened to ANY driver who happened to be driving at the time these kids ran out. Please, please, I am not in ANY way faulting anyone, but these poor drivers have to live the rest of their lives knowing that they were involved in such a horrendous incident.

This was a School event ending late at night, The school should be at fault or held responsible. Did the School have any crossing guards, this is a dark street the Kid need to cross. The City of Oak Forest has EMS, Police that could have been on 151 street help the kid cross Iím sure the school just needed to contact one of them.

I agree they should have done more prior to these accidents. The school claims to be in charge of kids to and from school each day. If a kid gets in a fight two blocks away from school at 3:30 pm he gets in trouble with the school. So why arent they taking responsibilty for kids safety to and from school and school promoted events.

By the way school board member John doolins wife is s crossing guard 151st in front of Hille. Certainly he should be aware of how dangerous that area is. why wasn't this school board Proactive!!

Then the school officials should have been all over the county to have the speed limit lowered before they made that a junior high and kids then had to cross 151st to get there I have lived in of 23 yrs. When it was an elementary. Only kids north of 151st went there

If you were gonna get hit by a car....would you rather it was traveling at 20 mph or 45 mph???? This child was so Severly injured because of the rate of speed involved

First and foremost, we Pray that this child makes a speedy recovery. That's the main thing. Our School District has dropped the ball on many things the past few years. It's a good thing that as a district, we have good Teachers because I personally believe that the Administrations have failed us miserably. They don't have a handle on the Bully situation that goes on at the schools, the "supervisors" on the playgrounds gather at one spot and let the kids run amok while they socialize and it seems that more and more all they care about is how much a kid or the family can pledge for another one of the fundraisers. They never seem to be satisfied. One instance was a few weeks ago, they had a "Technology" fundraiser where they wanted each room to raise $3000 I think? Then disappointed when that didn't happen!!?? Hold on, let me dig deeper. Maybe the higher admins. should cut thier salary in half to help?? Maybe start thinking about holding these events on a Saturday during the day? If the parents want to go, they'll do it on a Sat. as much as a week night. I remember when I went to Ridge, we had our School Carnival as they called it on a Sat. from 10-6.The place was packed.

Maybe the outgoing superintendant will donate some of my tax-funded OVERBLOWN PENSION to the family in return for DOING NOTHING FOR HER ENTIRE TERM ABOUT THE FACT THAT THERE IS NO FLASHING LIGHTS OR ADDITIONAL TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT THERE.

Was I yelling? Sure. She's getting over $150,000 a year in salary and benefits for the REST OF HER LIFE ON YOUR DIME, DISTRICT 142!!!!! This DB did NOTHING to help prevent this!!!!!!!!!

Everyone has alot to say about this situation, well then maybe you should have done something about it sooner also. You are all residents of Oak Forest and obviously know EVERYTHING. First, I have been the crossing guard there for 8 years, the day I started I have fought with the county about a light at that dangerous corner.THIS IS NOT A SCHOOL BOARD MATTER. This street is a county road and until they do something about it nothing can get done. Also before you start dishing out ignorant comments about people that are giving of their time, get the facts straight first. This is a tradegy that needs to be addressed, maybe think about all the people involved first instead of yourselves.

Unlike all of you I will use my name. I dont hide behind my keyboard and throw out comments and accusations that are false and ignorant just to here myself talk. Couple points about myself "OF 22 years" I have an Associates of Science degree in Psychology and a Bachelors degree in Communications so please refrain from stating I'm not educated because it simply not a true statement. True I'am the Advertising Director and quite the contrary at a very successful media company. I hope I'm not using too big of words so you can keep up. I also write a guest commentary column bi-weekly. Now that I have cleared up my background keep in mind I will save most of what I have to say for my column and, you will have to pay to read that, however FACT: 151 st is a County Road FACT: Numerous letters and grant applications from current, and past D142 school officials have been written to get Hille a "Blinking" School Zone sign like the one's outside of Arbor on both the South and North ends of Arbor. Ironically it was retiring outgoing Senator Maggie Crotty who was going to help D142 with their multiple requests, ironically it was Arbor who got the "blinking signs" and ironically Maggie Crotty got her political start on the Arbor Park School Board.
The last comment I will make is I would like to remind you there is a very special young man fighting with every ounce of energy he has to come out of his critical condition, there is another special young man who is still recovering from his injuries when he was hit last year on the same street. Take a moment and think about them, take a moment and type or e-mail a letter to outgoing Senator James Meeks, outgoing Senator Crotty, County Board President Preckwinkle, or candidate Napoleon Harris who will represent our district if elected in November. Ask them to help. Spend your energy working to change the speed limit, get a blinking sign , or an Edison light on the pole to light up the Hille cross walk. Call the Oak Lawn Ronald McDonald House and set an apppointment to cook one evening for the injured boys family who is sstaying their indefinatly, and all the families that stay their while Hope Childrens Hospital treat's their sick and injured kids. Drop off things the house may need to get these families through another day, make a donation of $10 which is the asking donation ( however not required) per night per family. Try that and then maybe just maybe you wont feel the need to take out all your issues on a useless blog.

Dont bother responding because I wont read it.

Actually if you read the article, The police chief is quoted as saying the accident was in the 5800 block of 151St in a 35 mph zone. 5800 would be two blocks west of Central, That is probaly right in front of Hille.

It may only be a 20 mph on school days when children are present and/or have hourly restrictions.???

I'll have to take note next time i'm in the area.

Then why did they they change the elementary school that was districted north of 151st only, to a junior high where the kids had to travel across 151st? The school officals knew there was not a light there in ...2005 ?? So why put the cart before the horse?? Make sure all your ducks are in a row before you build a millioon dollar school that can't get a traffic light from the county. Get the light first, have the speed limit changed first.

The speed limit is 35 mph from Central to Oak Park, however during school hours it is 20 mph in a school zone. When it was a elementary school there was not a crossing guard there. Since it has become a Junior High that is when we where hired to cross the kids before and after school. I agree, but as was mentioned in the above statement we have been asking, fighting and petitioning for this and there is no answers ever as to why a flashing light can not be there. Bottom line is we need, as a community to work together and get this done so that maybe in the future this will not happen again.
