ever since I can remember; this area has had flash floods since 1959. When the Ice was 12 to 16 feet thick, piled up on the side of the road, from the old WWP dam on the Clearwater up to Kooskia Hwy 12, and up Hwy 13 on the SouthFork.
Even Lapwai Creek would flood out Lapwaii. The Snake River would flood out the Clarkston and the Lewiston Civic Theatre's. That is why , no body bought up property along these places. Insurance was high (if you could get it) most of the time, you couldn't buy insurance in a flood zone. Now people live right up hugging the side of the banks of the rivers, They build their homes on sides of steep hills, Gee, I was told since I was a kid, that ,"don't build your house on the side of a hill or by a river. Seasonal floods are not new, just more complicated, with all the flood control damn's, and mankinds intervention with Mother Nature. Mankind spends alot of time on 'Habitat for Humanity', and very little time on the Habitat of Nature. Mankind over the years has promised to plant massive tree farms to help control the extra runnoff of water, and at the same time, over time, the lifespan of a man, or several lifetimes, those trees could provide future generations with the renewable resource. As people continue to be thoughtless, ahead of time, there will always be disasters, manmade disasters, that indirectly involve Mother Nature." I see the county workers, slack in their preparedness this time of year, especially when it comes to preparing ahead of time, when the storm is at its early stages of the season, by not clearing out, drainage area's, and boom, get hit with places the water has no place to go. Idaho has always been a swamp, you just can't see through the TV, driving your CAR, in a hurry to do nothing, except for self, I wish somebody issued me a plow, and turn me loose in a snowstorm, again. I love driving in the snow. It also waters my tree farms I planted since 74. Now its, warming, I guess we can put our faith in the men & women who control the locks of the dams, and hope they work for flood control. Even if Dworshak has a crack, oh what faith. There is alot of iron in there. Interesting to see the rust and metal breakdown report someday. And a big blow of the steamboats twain whistle, to the folks at Potlatch, who are clearing up more area to add to global warming. Don't forget those folks up the Lochsa, PlumCreekTimberFallers, they too, will add to the water fluctuation during the snow meltoffs. Where is the Soul of Frank Church when its' too late? I would still like to think that Idaho is not for sale. Rich people who raise the area's economy by population, seem to deplete the tax base of Idaho Counties. And with all the focus directed at County Commish projects, takes away for dealing with Mother Nature. Got innertubes to float the flood with? |
