Human overpopulation once again triumphs over balance, as mindless economic growth pushes on without a rudder. A city in that parched location should have maybe 200,000 people at most, but it's still politically incorrect to ask that cities (and economies) simply stop growing.
Going deeper into the root problem, there's still little action on ramping up global contraception. Everything's about giving the gluttonous hordes what they want. Conservation is still a joke because it keeps getting overridden by human numbers.
One hope for shrinking desert water supplies is that this (Peak Oil) recession permanently shrinks Las Vegas as a gambling hub, and the hordes who drive in from southern California at gas-wasting breakneck speeds will find somewhere else to play.
